Good old Boris

He spent twice that much on fake advertising for "brexit day" last October

I think so. Concerts and sad to say football matches and other non essential gatherings maybe, but once you stop people working en masse the human cost rises very quickly.

But then football outside the prem could be classed under the human cost rising.... League 1 wouldn't be able to cope whereas cancelling the Premier league wouldn't take as much of a hit

It’s huge swathes of the economy. We only got sick pay this year and that was because people were complaining that others were coming in sick and infecting people.

The Tories are in lala land if they think most people can just take two weeks off with no issues. Massively out of touch.

Exactly. There is the chain of events for the economy.

School Closes
Parents have to have time off work and use holiday
Businesses lose employees in that time and have to get cover in some way
People arent using businesses (high street, shops, etc) as they are staying in.

Businesses can potentially lose money twice.

Exactly. And ultimately if the economy tanks people die as they can’t afford food or heating or whatever.

Have to be careful though as arguably there’s an economic benefit if a load of sick old people die, free up saved wealth and reduce strain on the health and social care systems. But no one I’d hope is arguing for that.

No real right answers here I think other than have financial support on hand for businesses and people who can’t work.

Only if they are Wasps fans or Council Lovers

That's the thing, so many businesses will go pop. People won't be able to pay their mortgages etc.

It's OK for the MPs who have their nannys to look after the kids in one of their houses to say things like that.

If you were a decent human being then you would prioritise the welfare of your citizens, no matter what the cost.

Unfortunately the people running this country are not decent human beings.

It’s not that simple though is it? As I say there’s human costs to both action and inaction. The welfare of your citizens includes their ability to make a living.

It is actually- if you have £100m for Brexit adverts, if you can find the money to give MPs payrises, if you have millions to spend on commemorative coins, and you are currently finding the cash for a tunnel between NI & Scotland, then you have the money to subsidise childcare, you have the money to support paid sickleave, and you have the ability to do a lot more than go on National TV and blithely say "one theory is to just let the disease run its course without taking any draconian actions", while committing to pay 70p per head as the much smaller country next door commits to spend €667 per head.

They won't do that though, as a few less old people taking pensions & benefits can only be a good thing for them.

Exactly.

Who's going to pay the mortgages of the people who are told they can't go to work and won't get paid? If it's their employer, who's going to cover that cost?

Ah were at cross purposes. I was talking about lockdowns and quarantines. Yes as I already said financial support is needed.

I’d be shocked if there aren’t significant extra measures announced in the budget tomorrow

ps RBS (majority government owned) have already announced they will allow deferrals of mortgage payments for three months for those impacted

My mortgage is with them. Let's defer it and blow 3 months mortgage at Blackpool away.

Haha, like it !

joking apart that’s also where there is a fine balance. You offer deferrals (tax, mortgages etc) and it won’t be just those that need it that take advantage

You are a funny one. Distributing money to citizens and businesses is one of the primary functions of government.

The other thing is schools, if they close then parents can't go to work or have to pay a childminder.

If they can - they should hold off until as near to Easter hols as possible. That way if there is a extended time of schools being closed then some of it will fall in when they were closed anyway, and would have been off or made other arrangements.

I think it will happen - just when is the thing.

We've had our first case at work, one lad has been sent home as his wife has tested positive. I've just asked the question that shouldn't we all be sent to self isolation now? Still waiting for a response.

I am still ignorant to the whole thing, I have a bad headcold but the available info is so vague I might actually have the virus for all I know... the good news is that if I do then it feels no worse than a reasonably shitty dose of the sniffles, sneezing & sore throat.
