It's also been argued that because its effect in most people is a mild flu the number of confirmed cases is lower than 'seasonal flue'. This inflates the mortality rates as a percentage.

Having visited the supermarket today, for the first time in more than a week, I have to say I also don't get why the panic buying seems just to be about toilet rolls.

Anyway, I for one will be buying on the dips, even down to another 15-20%. I don't believe the hype.

There was some clown on c4 news claiming it to be worst virus since the Spanish flu. No evidence to show anything like that.

From bbc website tonight

Sports governing bodies and broadcasters have been called to a government meeting on Monday to discuss the staging of events behind closed doors if the coronavirus outbreak worsens and mass gatherings are banned.

The meeting is unlikely to be attended by ministers, but senior government officials will seek advice on the practicalities of staging sports events without fans, should it be needed.

It will be hosted by the government's Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) in London.

  • Premier League & EFL ditch pre-match fair-play handshakes
  • Government tells Premier League to 'step up' coronavirus planning
  • Coronavirus sport timeline
One person has died in Britain from the virus so far and more than 160 people have tested positive.

Italy has ordered all major sporting events throughout the country to be played without fans for one month in a bid to curb Europe's worst coronavirus outbreak, while the upcoming Italy v England Six Nations match in Rome has been postponed.

Within football's Premier League there is a growing expectation that matches may have to played behind closed doors within the next two weeks, depending on government advice.

The Premier League and EFL said pre-match handshakes between both teams and officials will not take place until further notice because of fears over the spread of coronavirus.

The measure came after the government asked the Premier League "to step up its contingency planning".

Several clubs have instructed players not to sign autographs or take selfies with fans.

See the Govt is calling a 'sports' meeting on Monday re: behind closed doors games/events. Glad I'm going to Ipswich today - could be the last time we can see the Sky Blues today for the season? - which would be plain odd.

As soon as anyone gets the virus on a team the competition is compromised as whole team will need to be isolated

You keep referencing this.
Do you believe that to be the case in Wuhan?
Given the surveillance on that population?
Italy yes , there Will be unrecorded cases .
The cruise ship currently is around 1% ,it may be Wuhan became overwhelmed increasing the count.
Re Spanish flu, that is the basis of the current model and one of the learned folk was asked on the beeb when asked suggested the modelling for this is similar.
It will come down to the reaction as to the result.

The spanish flu model.is very different. For example the Spanish flu killed mostly young adults instead of the old and suck and it soresd in the warmer months I stead of winter. The virus was very different. What they will take from it is planning but please dont mistake that for thinking the virus is the same

Not yet. Although there is talk of all elderly being told to stay at home. anyway. Win today/ stop the leagues / champions. If they give it to Liverpool, they should do the same for us.

That would be awful as this potentially could be such a great end to the season but ultimately if we went up then great

It will all go swimmingly well the behind closed doors notion until the first footballer contracts the virus , then the whole team will have to isolate , the domino effect will stop this season I am afraid , players using same shower facility and changing room is transmission heaven ,

like I said it is going to happen whole squads isolated no games being played

They could come in their kit and then go home to shower after the game.

Italy has been testing a lot more than other countries. Take a look at those who have died, they’re either elderly or had pre-existing conditions, much like those who fall victim to normal flu.

It also has the world’s largest elderly population at 23%.

The whole thing looks like madness. What is known at the moment is that in the overwhelming majority it produces mild symptoms and that it has a co-morbidity status in the old and frail, with death rates on par with seasonal flu such as swine fever. As for banning public entertainment events, how are these any worse than air-conditioned offices and supermarkets?

Playing EFL games behind closed doors is unrealistic. Most teams have 5 home games left and there's probably 10-20 teams in L1 and L2, before even mentioning the conference and below, that would be at serious risk of going bust missing out on 5 match day revenues. Players and staff still need to be paid and there'll be no money to pay them.

It will either be carry on as normal or Postpone the season for a few weeks. The premier league would be able to cope, not sure about teams in the championship.

How long can they postpone an entire league for though and is there much prospect of it only being a few weeks?

Lock all footballers in training camps, like the World Cup but they aren’t allowed out. All games streamed to reduce financial losses. Sorted.

One problem would be if key players were infected / quarantined. What if, say, Marosi, Dabo and Walsh had to be isolated - could the games be postponed, or would we just have to play the back-up players? Could it derail ours / other teams' seasons? Be interesting to see the stance the authorities take if or when it happens.

Surely if a couple of players from a team were isolated, the whole team would be wouldn't they. Until they were cleared anyhow.
