Mass producing it ready in case it works isn’t ‘short cutting it’

He was clearly referring to the combining of testing stages 2 and 3 as being the "shortcut".

But I don’t get how combining the stages to try and end a world pandemic as early as possible could be bad in any way? Like it has to be pushed quicker than anything else

I think there’s two things here. Doms right that starting manufacturing ahead of time is probably a good idea *if that vaccine is showing promise*. Others are right that we have to be careful to pick a winner because of the cost. I’m not sure any of us aside maybe BSB know enough to know if this vaccine shows the right amount of promise in comparison to the 150 others.

Derek Lowe explained it quite well here and he has since updated his post since the original one went up.

Criticism of the Oxford Coronavirus Vaccine

The Oxford one is now at clinical trials on humans, which is around 10,000 people I think. It did not prevent infection after one dose, but they think it might after multiple. Another vaccine seemed to prevent infection but was given in 3 doses and the monkeys were exposed to less of the virus.

Because stage 3 is a safety check. Think of it as the peer review stage where trials are carried out by 3rd parties and this is where we see if there were any errors with the original trials and the data produced.

Well there is no reason why it can’t be sped up if say double the amount of people are safety checking it

No

Because Stage 3 checks the data produced in stage 2.

This is basic science and common sense. You can not properly check the results of stage 2 if you are checking it before stage 2 has finished. 1

What if there’s a horrible side effect and it wasn’t picked up because we rushed it and this side effect takes lives on a mass scale? Worse death rate than Covid 19? We only find this out after it’s been rolled out worldwide and a couple of years down the line? They have to make sure the cure isn’t more dangerous than the illness, you don’t cut of your head to cure a headache.

But we aren’t in a position to wait years for that? We can’t have lockdowns every 6 months for 2/3 years

Both my children are back in school today for the first time in 13 weeks. Feels strange, my daughter returned on Tuesday though and she seems to be much better off for seeing some friends. My son has become less and less active as lockdown has progressed. I think he needs the stimulation of school.

The Oxford vaccine doesn’t prevent infection it just reduces severity of the disease.

It's potentially only an extra couple of months. problem with clinical trial is the original trial can just be wrond and no one will know why and will only be able to say they couldn't repeat the results of the original trial.

If you are going to inject millions of people with a live version of the pathogen it really is best practice

Even phase 3 isn’t a guarantee List of withdrawn drugs - Wikipedia this isn’t even the full list of drugs that passed phase 3. Yes some were withdrawn for commercial reasons but the vast vast majority were withdrawn for medical reasons that only become apparent from studying the effects when in general use. Liver and kidney damage seem to be the common theme. Not sure what happens if the whole world is waiting on a liver transplant.

Yep, but AZ have I think won a $750 million deal for making it. Huge sum if it gets rejected though the cost to these companies of drugs failing at clinical trials is not unfamiliar territory to them.

You need to get your head around this Dom. We may not have a choice. You really should prepare yourself mentally for that possibility, it will make life a lot easier for you if you do. If we find a miracle cure then great but history doesn’t favour that. You’re setting yourself up for a potential fall here with your faith.

Fancy wanting to sure a drug that will in all likelihood will be taken by a large proportion of the population is safe before using it. What's he like?!

Instead of trying to push it quicker than other treatments we’ll just wait years and years like you want and then we’ll see how bad things really are....

We won't have them. That's why we needed to get this one right and track and trace up and running. We've failed.

We're relying on social distancing from here in in until we get a vaccine.

The question that needs to be asked is "What is worse, an extra couple of months of restrictions or potentially releasing a vaccine that is flawed and will lead to a bigger spike of cases as people will think they are protected when they are not?"

Yeah but people on this thread aren’t saying a few months they are saying ‘years’

We can’t sit around for years or else the government would get slaughtered for that too

It’s actually another virus that’s being used, just one that stimulates antibodies. I think the best hope with this vaccine is that it could make everyone asymptomatic if they caught the virus. This would be good enough for me-if the evidence shows this to be the case after trials
