If you were born in one country and have that on your birth certificate, move to another at a young age, pick up the language , culture, etc then you are more than likely to feel a sense of belonging and association to it. You're birth certificate may say different, but it's your life's experiences that determine what you actually feel about where you are from .
I do think if you have absolutely no recollection of your country of birth and grow up elsewhere it would be difficult to feel much sense of being of the nationality that might be on you're birth certificate.

That’s you and Boris then who identify as Turkish. Well, audience depending when it comes to Boris. Although Boris did spend large parts of his childhood being raised in Belgium too. So we have an American, Belgian, Turkish PM who invented the character Boris as you know him some time during his university years. What’s your problem again with David identifying as Irish?

Another two weeks off for Boris incoming?

What with a few hours work PMQs yesterday it's been a busy week for him, so he is probably worn out and ready for a rest.

"But the spokesman did not go as far as saying that he was confident that Johnson would not be asked to self-isolate if Sharma tested positive. Asked if Johnson would comply if he were asked to self-isolate, the spokesman said: “We would follow the advice given by the medical experts.” "

I remember in Italia '90 most people I knew were supporting Ireland, not England, Cov has one of the biggest proportions of Irish of any city in the country, I think I saw it was estimated at 10% having Irish heritage.

I don't see the problem or why it matters.

I know as my mum is one of them.

If they're Irish and cheering on Ireland then great but if your an Englishman and you'd rather cheer another nation on then I think you've got issues .

Going to be interesting to see how they play this after yesterday’s briefing where he emphasised the importance of tests and isolating if you’ve been in contact with anyone.

His parents are Irish, not sure what else there is to know. You can have as many bits of paper as you like saying where you're born, but if you feel more of an attachment to the place your family is from then thats how you'll class yourself.

I have an Irish passport and no English passport.

Wayne mate as I said if it makes you upset you can try and change a number of international treaties.

Some English people for some reason want to be something else. I've never met a Welsh, Scottish or Irish person want to pour over their family tree in the hope of being able to have a claim to being half English, but a fair few English like to claim to be a bit of something else. Perhaps because the English dominate the UK in terms of number they just want to be able to say they're a bit different from the rest.

Sex isn’t a made up concept TBF (let’s not go down that tangent), nationality is.

Are you telling me you’d see the child of illegal immigrants, born the day after they got off the boat, as British as anyone else?

Edit: also, don’t use American political terminology. Very few left liberals on this forum, most of the left are socialist.

Am I still allowed to support Northern Ireland and England? I identify as British and not specifically Northern Irish or English and have always supported both.

I've got a bit of Scottish through my dad's side, but I'm legit because I can read all the Spud chapters in Irvine Welsh books without needing any translation.

How about the children who came here with their parents as part of the windrush generation, only ever attended school here, only ever worked here, only ever paid taxes here, only life they’ve ever known is here etc.

Off course you can. It’s your choice and that’s exactly the point. WTF it’s got to do with anyone other than yourself how you choose to identify is beyond me.

I think that pretty much sums it up perfectly- its an individual's choice depending on how they feel, and silly arguments about birth certs & passports mean zilch.

Some people take the minutest of things and make mountains out of them. Snowflakes. So David was born here to Irish parents who raised him to identify as Irish. So what. If you’ve got time and energy to get wound up by that you probably need to take up a hobby or something to fill the empty space that you’re filling with pointless anger and bitterness.
