Asda and Aldi introduce a rule to only pick stuff up if people are buying it. Bit late, have they only just realised?

Remember that PPE from Turkey that was going to be here Sunday but was then 'delayed'?

People should do that anyway, I was in Aldi last week and some scruffy fucker was picking up virtually every packet of something from the fridge. Why do you need to handle anything if you're not blind?

I was using blind as a catch all term. This person wasn't mind as they were not examining it closely, just picking things up and putting them down again.

Hows that going to work when they stack half the stuff so you can’t see what it is without picking it up?

I haven't had a chance to look into it but obviously the government has gotten PR agencies to perform dubious tasks on their behalf and have put out false narratives on social media before. That didn't have much of a negative effect so I guess it doesn't matter either way.

That's true. Trump and Brexit have damaged politics beyond repair. And yes, before anyone mentions it Iraq didn't help.

The problem is the government is now starting to challenge content on social media it considers counter productive and perhaps even dangerous during the pandemic which is fine.

However, during the general election when the fact check stuff came to light Raab said no one gives a toss about social media cut and thrust which really gave people a licence for this sort of thing

Its like when Gove made his we've had enough of experts comment.
There are consequence to this irresponsible rhetoric.

But it also gives a govt (or someone with dictatorial tendencies) to take that challenging of content and untruths and use it to crack down on dissidence rather than actual wrong information because it all depends on what the person in charge decides is wrong.

It does and that's why there needs to be balance.
That's why I would penalise organisations heavily for printing bullshit.
I know it's not really so much of a relevant medium any more but I've always said if a newspaper print a bullshit front page then they should be made to put the retraction and apology on the front page. Might make them think twice.

I agree, and the size of it should be made much bigger. 1/4 page minimum and font size at least twice that of normal so it stands out.

Agreed - the Apprentice has been dreadful in this respect as it has condensed 'success' down solely to making most profit every week. Nothing else at all.

As I mentioned yesterday though Pete the deaths happening on an actual day appear to be gradually decreasing and have been (at least in England) for a couple of weeks.

Appreciate its little comfort but whilst the headline daily numbers are jumping around actual deaths per day are trending down

What I still can’t quite work out is whether all of the backdated fatalities are still hospital only or include outside of hospital

ps I know all of the semantics are kind of irrelevant (as every death is a tragedy) but I am just talking from the perspective of seeing if things are improving or not.

18k tests / 11,636 people
4301 positives

These are OK numbers infection wise I think, slowing down very gradually taking into account the additional tests. It is still high numbers though, nearly 2 weeks of 4k + cases. The death toll is going to be close to 1k a day for at least another fortnight if not longer.

The NHSE stuff you shared is just the NHS hospital based deaths, they're all linked back to an NHS provider.

Every daily announced figure include deaths from days, sometimes weeks ago. I’m not sure of why there was such a backlog coming into today’s figures but it definitely would’ve been partially caused by ‘the weekend factor’

I had a crazy email the other day where they were going to surprise them at work with pizza. I'm hoping it's now rather more structured than that!

Misleading headline, it's worth is the cost not the price.

It does seem pretty random, I’d just allow it with a valid NHS email

very strange that some are taking so long to be reported and then get added on in quite large chunks.

I don’t think the daily deaths should be that high, I’d hope that today was more of an anomaly due weekend catch up and a significant number of historical/backdated additions. Could be wrong though, just basing theory on the decreasing day rate on that NHS England spreadsheet

*again, not meaning to offend anyone with the unemotive language

If they sell pizza at a tenner a go they can say we're giving millions worth of pizza based on that price but if they only cost they a quid each to make its not actually costing them millions.

Might just be a cynic but my first thought was they have loads of stock they need to shift before it goes out of date.
