We've got less of a lockdown than many other countries. Other countries don't let you leave the house without permission yet here we still have non-essential workers travelling to work every day and arguments about who is and isn't allowed to use parks.

That's true. Tbf, despite the occasional headline incident, it shows we're a fairly compliant nation really.

596 deaths in hospital today big reduction. Until you remember they think 4500 could have died in care homes

rumours abound that Gove sees his opportunity

eg:

it’s not a popular opinion but I stand by it: while “the left” are standing by, “the right” are calculating the next move. That’s why they always win.

Gove has the naked ambition of Johnson. Nowhere near the charisma. Be a huge mistake to get rid of Johnson for him.

At the moment I think if Sunak were to go for it he might have a problem. Comes across far more composed, young and energetic. Plus it'd tick a diversity box.

However hearing about how he seemingly wants to base strategy on economy rather than health reasons (OK he is chancellor but his background is investment banking/hedge funds so it'd be his default position) it's meet the new boss same as the old boss (probably worse) in that respect.

No-one in their right mind would challenge a leader while this is ongoing, and why you'd want to take over at a time we'd be entering the worst economic period in living memory is anyone's guess.

I could see Johnson getting to the end of the crisis and saying he's stepping down for health reasons, so he won't have to deal with the economic fallout. He wanted to be PM, he's done it and now he's had a taste of the work involved he'll want out. Wants his weekends off and chance to bang anything that moves. IMO it'd be a smart decision for him and give him a 'legacy' - dealt with coronavirus, made himself ill doing it and had to retire as a result.

“when this is over”- you mean in the same way there was an unbiased & professional inquiry into Hillsborough? Not a chance- they need to be questioned, challenged now because these fucking ghouls will already be calculating how to apportion blame to everyone else while saying “now isn’t the right time”

I do think it needs to be ascertained exactly what the facts are regarding PPE, ventilators, testing, policy early on before shooting the mouth of. If you go early and some things are later shown to just be rumours that were unverified it will just give the Tories ammo to fight back. Being a lawyer Starmer knows this. Make sure of the facts and play it hard when parliament is sitting and things are more back to normal. Right now using it as a means of attack could be seen as political points scoring and be unpopular with people who want the focus to be on fighting the virus.

I admit in the US there is the things following shootings that 'now is not the time - think of the victims' but when it's settled down they use the excuse it hasn't happened in a while - no problem, nothing to see here.

It won’t end here - this government will try and send kids back to school too early, social distancing is utterly impossible in an education setting, and then we just start the cycle of disease spreading all over again.

But such as decision would add to growing list of fuck-ups and incompetence.

Denmark has done it for primary school children but has attempted to maintain distancing measures. Ridiculous to attempt in classrooms here often with 30+ children plus teaching staff

Balanced?

Most only do balanced as long as it leans to one side it seems. But this Gove thing could be the reason why a Tory rag would go against Boris. When things go shite they change leader. This is how they normally keep a hold of power.

I would prefer them to keep Boris than switch for Gove. He is the master of a single one liner and nothing else.

In Denmark primary school classes can’t exceed 28 and the average is 19. Big defence.

'Facts' that most people seem to want to put their own twist on. Can't remember the last time that so many articles can mean so many different things.

Actually I’d say that the U.K. is failing in three major areas- inept government, lack of any opposition and a compliant & agenda driven media. That’s a recipe for a clusterfuck which is about where we are right now.

There is no such thing as an effective opposition... if the media label the opposition as effective, it means they are compliant and don’t challenge the status quo.

Simply no way a secondary school of 1500 could open with any kind of social distancing in place.

On PPE many truths are not getting told. A dlivery on a Friday was made to a 'desperate' hospital. On the Monday a second delivery by the same driver was made and the original delivery was still on the side unopened.
On ventilators why is it taking so long to get approval passed for Dyson's models that are ready to be delivered?

You will get scare stories, misinformation from both camps and political brinkmanship. You have incompetent NHS procurement managers and complete lack of management control within the NHS with more and more pen pushers taken from the front line positions. You have new urgently built hospitals going largely vacant?

Do your own research, do not listen to the main stream media or the conspiracy media. Above all do not beleive a word China says.

He is basically saying don't believe anything but the bollocks he chooses to believe.

If there wasn't a shortage of ppe the government would not have changed their guidance to use less of it.

Don't listen to cranks like you either. Approval of the Dyson vent is a domestic affair only.
The problem we've got with PPE is that we don't have any stockholding and are reliant in manufacturers delivering in a time of great demand. Despite this pandemic being reasonably foreseeable in January we did nothing about it.

He said this over a month ago. Funny how pro Boris papers are all rehashing this story on today of all days.

(edit) I’m not even sure if it’s what he actually said. Think he’s always said that their modelling predicted it would go away in May and return in August.

Dom, I know you’ve deleted your post but the publications that are rehashing this story this afternoon in light of the Times article today are very pro Boris. So in answer to your redacted question it clearly has everything to do with Boris. At least to those publications anyway.

If you focus on the individual when things go bad you can change it and thus slightly disassociate yourself as a party from it. "We've got rid of the one that let you down. So vote for us again" Let the leader have the glory if things go well, but make sure they're the scaprgoat when things go bad.

But it's not just a Tory thing, the Labour government is now 'Blair', just as Tory was 'Thatcher' etc.
