Can anyone explain what happened with SARS? I remember it, but it barely touched these shores did it.

That was a Coronavirus, so what happened there and how long was it before they managed to get a vaccine?

There were a lot fewer deaths too.

What was different?

Better managed I think. AFAIK there’s still no SARS-Cov-1 vaccine.

I need more beer. So to sum up, seems like the situation is currently:

1. Boris and the government fucked up so badly that 10,000 people and rising died, with the U.K. on course to be worst hit in Europe. Boris almost died himself due to his own carelessness and stupidity.

2. Boris is now a hero for surviving, whereas the 10,000 dead are barely mentioned in the media.

4. China are the great evil who lie about death figures and don’t care about their own people... we deliberately withhold how many healthcare workers have died, that’s ok.

5. it’s nurses’ own fault for overusing PPE

Boozy Easter coming up

have a good Easter weekend though and everyone else (reckon the amount of booze being consumed at home by the nation this weekend will be going through the roof !!!)

Its not really until this crisis that I truly realised how British exceptionalism is weaponised to prevent criticism of our government. Works a treat. Noticed it a bit before when normal social democratic policies from other countries are discussed, but really stark with this crisis.

Not just here though. Many countries have that same nationalism. The US is the prime example, although places like China and Russia are good examples too.. Being a patriot seems to be someone who just blindly accepts that whatever their country does it the way it should be done.

If it's not a British idea or made in Britain it'll be rubbish compared to what we can come up with ourselves. If you don't believe that you're a traitor and hate Britain. The British Empire ended but the attitude towards the rest of the world still prevails for some.

I've a feeling there's going to be a worldwide epidemic of people ignoring guidelines this weekend.

A combination of good weather and religious festivals is going to see widespread civil disobedience.
I shall be watching with interest from the confines of my garden.

The Chief Nursing Officer is a civil servant. The head of the RCN will be elected by nurses.

I agree but there's no probably about it. Planning for a massive global health crisis that could kill hundreds of thousands or potentially millions of people should not be approached in the same way as building a car. It needs to be there ready to go from the off - there won't be time to produce and source it before it's too late (esp if people are getting sick and production/supply is affected further) as we're finding out.

If I can figure that out with basic logic and general knowledge you'd think those with access to experts would be able to. But they just ignore the warnings and carry on.

We don't have the argument about the nuclear deterrent by saying we'll start to enrich the uranium when the enemy presses the button. Too late.

But before we know it it'll be back to "we don't have the money, cuts must be made" etc. But hey, we stood clapping the NHS workers when we needed then so that's fine.

It’s been top of our risk register for years. Not preparing is on par with winding down MI5 because we can’t afford it or as you say not having a nuclear deterrent. The fact is the ideology was to underfund where possible.

Browns govt take some blame, though dealing with the GFC might be seen as an excuse for taking your eye off the ball I guess.

That's correct, but you do tend to find sourcing the raw materials a hell of a lot easier then a finished product.

I don't want to be drawn into a debate about trade deals and such like, simple fact is the yanks can do what they want, too strong economically and militarily.

Incredible. Fucking state of some people.
What sort of mind weighs up the pros and cons of missing out on a chocolate egg to prevent potentially catching and spreading a serious respiratory disease and decides it's worth the risk?

Well, there's huge divisions within the EU between member states for starters, but lets not go down that rabbit hole. Rightly or wrongly, the people of this nation voted to leave, time to get over it and to make the best of the it.

If I remember rightly it was deadlier, but harder to catch. Don't take that as gospel though.

What needs to be remembered is that there are probably hundreds of these things that organisations like the WHO monitor and track, nipping them in the bud before they start.

It's inevitable that once in a while one will manage to get through. For people like Trump to then have a go at them and, again, threaten to cut funding is ridiculous. This would've happened a long time again and way more often without them. So when one does it's down to your own healthcare system and preparations. As has been pointed out, it's not IF these things happen, it's WHEN.

Just shown him doing a web interview on the beeb.
Said they're investigating to see whether they caught it at work or elsewhere.
Is there a bit of an anomaly building up around the number of victims here as well?

Deflecting. Instead of investigating this (I wonder if people caught this disease in the place which is filled with people with it that they have to be very close to to treat them or elsewhere) how about investigating where the fuck all the PPE and ventilators you supposedly had on order have got to.

As for the idea of NHS workers 'wasting' PPE that is just unbelievable. At a time like this when they're exposed to a deadly contagion the only way they could be wasting it is by setting fire to it.

The States are already well on the road to removing the independent checks and balances that hold the government to account.
They've a long way to go until they get to Orbans Hungary or Modis India but they're on that path.
We need to be vigilant it doesn't happen here.
