I didn't mention his skin colour. My assumption was more that you were singling him out because he was a labour politician.

I'm not saying I agree with the advice at the time, but it's very difficult to lockdown quickly like they did in an authoritarian state like China. There were always other factors at play. If we're criticizing anyone it should be Public Health England, but it's still criticism in hindsight. From that point the situation changed very quickly - the day after there was a large surge in cases. It wasn't until 10 days later that football was suspended though, which looks very late considering we now know that the Atalanta Vs Valencia game was what caused the huge spread in Italy and contributed to an acceleration in Spain.

I'm not loyal to any political party, my posts on here express that countless times, I am quite fond of Boris though, he seems too genuinely believe in this country and the people in it, no politician is beyond criticism.

Getting so sick of the coughing and being shagged out after making a coffee or going for a wee so just glad to have a diagnosis and some antibiotics to give light at the end of the tunnel.

In fairness, as much as I disagree, that article is dated 3rd March when there were still very few cases in this country. The risk at that time was still probably pretty low and the advice from the government at the time was to carry on as normal and shake the hands of Coronavirus sufferers while visiting a hospital.

It was a genuine criticism, it's poor decision making from those in power. Why are you so defensive over a Muslim politician? are they beyond judgement?

No. It’s. Not. At that point there was no reason to avoid public transport. We didn’t have an outbreak here, we’d been managing cases well.

Also, there’s an outbreak in Birmingham, where the criticism of Andy Street?

Going round in circles here, I just think that a person in his position needs to put his neck on the line every once in a while, ignore the 'experts' and do what is right by the people he represents.

We’ve mentioned positive things. I just said we handled the first cases well. We just don’t have some weird father complex with a politician. No politician is your mate. “Ohh Jeremy Corbyn” was cringe and so is this.

He made the comment on exactly the same day Boris made his infamous handshake comment that gets a lot of traction in this thread. Either both were stupid or both can use the excuse they were just going off expert advice at the time.

So which experts told Boris it was OK to shake the hands of Coronavirus victims? It certainly wasn’t Chris Whitty as he promptly corrected him with a very red face that meant he was either angry with Boris or embarrassed for him.

We've been managing cases well? what planet are you on? If it was managed well, we wouldn't be in this shit show of a situation.

Again, are we only allowed to criticise Brown politicians if we do the exact same to the whites at the same time?

Ignoring experts is a nonsensical thing to do.
Our politicians ignored the recommendations of the 2016 pandemic drill and look at the state of the NHS going in to this crisis.
Of course experts do get it wrong and shouldn't be beyond question.
I'm not even sure the London mayor has the power to lock down the city unilaterally from the rest of the country anyway

So what exactly would qualify Sadiq Khan to ignore expert advice on the subject of a pandemic? As far as I’m aware he was a lawyer not a scientist specialising in the field of pandemics.

Coronavirus: Health effects of a COVID-19 recession 'could be worse than the pandemic'

In a new briefing, it notes a recent debate on "whether the adverse health effects of a recession may be greater than the increased morbidity and mortality within the pandemic itself".

This is true, its worrying how the cure could turn out to be worse than the virus itself which makes the governments job so difficult

I really don't get why the IFS is constantly referred to, they're absolutely wedded to neo liberalism. They will hate any state intervention as it does not fit their paradigm at all.

I just had a thought.

I have just received my Boris letter urging us all to stay at home and follow the guidance.

Boris has sent this to every household.

Boris has the virus.

Has Boris just infected the whole nation with Coronavirus?

He would have, completely, I agree, Which is why you need a strong politician with broad shoulders to take the shit he would have got, at least he could have turned round and said, these maybe extreme measure but I'm doing them for your benefit.

Even just little measures like contentiously cleaning hand rails, providing staff with hand sanitizer or gloves, cleaning staff areas between shifts would have reduced numbers.

Our politicians failed to act, every last one of them, simple as act. I've been critical and vocal about it.

You do realise the tests don’t get turned around in 5 mins don’t you? In fact save it, not being funny but you don’t seem to have any clue at all what’s going on with the figures.

To be fair....the figures appear to be poorly compiled & only provide a very very rough snapshot...and even that snapshot is polluted with a varying degree of lag....
...and of course it doesn't take into account all the deaths in care homes & the massive increase in "unexplained deaths" at home that are currently being dealt with in the main by the police & coroners office...
My wifes cousin is a copper and his shifts are currently filled with domestic violence cases & helping shift body bags.....it would seem an awful lot more people are dying of this than the official figures suggest

What qualifies me? I have no qualifications but I have a brain, I know if you have highly infectious people, it's best to keep them away from the healthy ones. You don't need to spend 7 years doing a medical degree to have that 'brainwave'.

I agree about PPE.
He should be doing more to help TFL staff rather than just hiding behind the government say it's for NHS workers which he appears to be doing.

It's a big leap from that to what you're suggesting.
