Says on twitter that Boris won’t be able to come out for a while yet, he has to isolate for the full 14 days, so whereas Hancock had British Coronavirus, looks like Johnson has the EU version.

Because 11 months ago I went from my permanent contract of 9 years to a fixed term 12 month contract covering my old bosses maternity leave. Technically I've just come to the end of that contract and they're not renewing.

Unless anyone knows differently. Employment law not my strong point...

As above mate. I was but then took a mat cover promotion for 12 months on a fixed term contract. I had the option to go back to my old role but had done it for 4 yrs and thought that this 12 month mat cover would open other doors. It has done for everyone else who has done a mat cover in my company in the last 10 yrs.

Unfortunately for me, mine coincided with a world stopping pandemic.

Poor luck I guess. I guess I could've say no to them permanently filling my old role but I obviously couldn't foresee this.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and all that....

If you’re on a fixed-term contract
You will be entitled to statutory redundancy pay if your employer doesn’t renew your fixed-term contract because the job doesn’t exist any more and you had either:

  • a fixed-term contract for 2 years or more

  • shorter contracts that followed on from each other and added up to 2 years or more

And if you are entitled to statutory, you should also be entitled to company

so 10 years work at statutory = 10 weeks pay up to £525 per week (tax free)

I would be amazed if you weren’t entitled to redundancy- legally I think you’d be deemed to be permanent after all that time, and also that your length of service after a decades service would probably not be seen as having stopped when you took the other role- you have 10 years’ service, we’re not talking a couple of months. Definitely get advice, it’ll be worth it.

Spoke to my good friend who works at UHCW again yesterday. Daughters mother also works at George Elliot.

Capacity is fine as it stands and PPE is also fine across the board.

Has it not occured to anyone that this is media scaremongering to get everyone a bit shouty? I'm not saying there isn't a shortage on some places but the media rhetoric of 'oh my god they are having to treat patients wearing a quiche for protection' gets clicks. Adequate PPE doesnt

Granted London is probably a shit show due to population, but it seems (as it stands) the trusts in the midlands at least have got thier act together.

Deffo look into it before you just walk away without it!

Would have thought as you have been at the company for so long you would be entitled, the change of job is not much different to somebody being promoted or moved about within the company is it?

Given that the media is just reporting what healthcare professionals all around the country are telling them then no, I don’t think it’s media scaremongering. Don’t shoot the messenger and all that.

If you are with the same employer, then you will have 10 years of unbroken service.
Would I be correct in assuming that you were seconded to cover the maternity post on a temporary contract basis at an enhancement on your previous pay? If so, then your original post or one at the same level should be available for you to revert to.
If that post has disappeared then the company will need to revert to a consultation process and issue you with an "at risk" letter.
Ultimately, if there is no position available for you, then they would have to pay you redundancy.

Already had some good advice privately from 3 forum members this morning which has put me in a more positive frame of mind. Going to start a thread on that at some point as this place truly can be a great place.

Bad to subject...I've got 3 months furlough to look into it. Need to get through today first...could be emosh! 10 years...such a massive part of my life. Even met the wife here when I started!

Let's do this...

Nope.

GP's and consultants all around the country have spoken of shortages.

If there isn't a problem at GE, I would say that is the exception rather than the rule.

Hiya. No, I wasnt seconded. I applied for the mat cover as it was in my area of expertise (my old bosses role) and did receive a pay rise. I was given the option of leaving my old role open but I had done it for 4yrs and wanted the change so I told them they could fill it permanently instead of just for 12 months so I could just walk back into it after my old boss returned from her maternity leave.

Some might say that was a mistake...and it looks as if it was. However, it was the right decision at the time as I'd seen every mat cover in my (at the time) 9yrs service, move onto something better at the end of the mat cover when the person they were covering returned.

Whilst I'm not the top of my profession, I'm certain I'm well thought of amongst senior leaders. A couple had also commented that I had done well and was brave in taking a mat cover and that I would be fine at the end of it.

Along comes coronavirus to completely change the outlook. That's the story really.

I think you might have resigned from your permanent position by virtue of taking this fixed term role, you might want to check some of your paperwork though. Your employer should have offered it to you on secondment / temporary promotion (i assume it was a promotion). Was there a break in service? Were you re-engaged as technical new starter?

I'd speak to an employment lawyer just in case, even if it is in order to claim redundancy. You might argue it is reasonable to expect that even with a 12 month FTC you have continuity of service and thus are entitled to whatever the redundancy policy says tbh.

Enough of your nonsense. The hysterical, big-girl's-blouse politico scaremongers on this forum won't like it. I agree with them, by the way. We're all going to die. All 250,000 - 500,000 of us. Me next, probably. It's all Boris Johnson and that nasty Conservative government's fault, and this could all have been avoided if only we'd acted a bit sooner and thrown a bit more money at the problem. Italy and France will show us the true way forward. Hallelujah. Oh well. It was fun while it lasted.

UK still awaiting reliable antibody blood test

Today Programme

BBC Radio 4

The UK has not yet found a reliable antibody blood test for coronavirus, England's Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said.

"At the moment we haven't got a reliable home test," he said.

The UK government is aiming to carry out 100,000 coronavirus tests a day in England by the end of April.

Mr Hancock confirmed the 100,000 might all be swab tests for the virus itself.

He said he was "not assuming any [antibody tests] come on stream" in order to hit the target by the end of the month.

Hopefully when this is all over one of the things that will come out of it is a look at how employees are treated and how one sided things can be.

I know you changed to a fixed term position but the number of people who aren't considered permanent employess and have been left to sort themselves out in this mess should be a bit of a wake up call. You've got huge industries where it seems technically nobody is actually employed!

You could also request to have your redundancy transferred if your skillset is more valuable to the company than other individuals. As an an analogy, employee a) David Speedie is being made redundant essentially to free up expenses. However, the company have not considered that David is a more qualified asset and may consider another role if it is proven he is more worthwhile than employee b) Julian Darby.
