While flag waving gimps were pushing for Big Ben to bong on January 31st, we should have been preparing for the crises in the NHS that have been threatening to erupt and indeed now have emerged. Shows just where the priorities lay, and how thick most people are.

Ironically, the tightening of ir35 has been put on hold due to covid. I appreciate that swathes of those working in the gig economy are simply exploited workers; but many others are very well renumerated non-payroll employees who have been happy not to take the protections and fringe benefits afforded to payroll workers, in exchange for salaries that typically equate to 2.5-3 times payroll, in part inflated by only paying 20 per cent tax on 'paye' and divis. I work alongside self-employed folk who typically pick up between 450 and 750 per day working in the public sector.
People at work now getting hospitalised and still we’re staying open to try and keep some projects on target.

I am all for the applause, but the pictures on the TV are showing thousands of people on the street, all very close together.
I think I speak on behalf of nearly everyone when I say that your son's a hero along with all other healthcare professionals. Unfortunately these false promises by the government every other day will continue to be met with a retweet/share from those who voted for them, without realising that barely any of these pledges have been achieved.
The obsession on the part of governmentalists that we can't challenge previous actions, nor suggest in a constructive manner how things can/should be done differently, is worrying. How do we learn from past mistakes if we don't own up to them? That's a shocking level of arrogance that no doubt the flag wavers will be quick to defend - indeed they're willing to give up their own wellbeing for it.
Agree with everything you say. We all know who they are, they’re quiet now because they know the NHS position is indefensible, and anyway their only stock answer seems to be “yeah but it’s even worse in other countries” as if we should all be really grateful for what is going on here.

In amongst the sadness and tragic events, it’s almost as if some higher force was at work enacting seismic change in the world.
Hard capitalist governments are being forced to roll out enormously socialist policies. Environmental damage has slowed due to lockdown. The air is cleaner, and wildlife is benefiting. Previously undervalued working people such as those in healthcare & retail finally have something approaching the respect they richly deserve. People are spending more time at home and with family as opposed to behind a desk all day every day with ‘colleagues’.
And now Mexico are building a wall to keep the Americans out.
Why did it have to be a lethal worldwide pandemic that brought these things about?
Balance of power. Capitalism is an excellent system to distribute wealth when times are good. After all, few could argue that the creation of jobs to sustain livelihoods is a bad thing. While this is going on though, there's a complete imbalance of power. Yes, when times are good, employment is high, people will continue to elect those who created the conditions in which these circumstances prevailed. But little do they know that the rich benefit so much more, so the vulnerable continue to bootlick politicans on the proviso that 'things are going well'.
Then comes the point where the politicans get carried away. They think they can streamline public services to line their own coffers a bit more, to give their friends a tax break. Great - it goes unnoticed when the NHS isn't under pressure. But it leaves an awful amount to be accounted for when things do go wrong.
And now we have it. There's been a reversal in the imbalance of power in relative terms. More people, at least I hope, are waking up to the idea that the governmentalists have played us into thinking that they were on our side all along. And now some backtracking needs to be done.
You’re right. For a start I hope that everyone who believed it when they were told “there is no magic money tree” clearly see that was a lie. In fact I hope that when this is all under control, everyone remembers the lessons that have been learned, & sees the myths and lies that were used to control them for what they were.

What are your thoughts on the situation on how several major world equilibriums are going through a kind of pole shift, with the right turning left, and the environment flourishing while humans have been forced to leave things well alone? This whole thing is shit, but if we look around us there are signs that it doesn’t have to be this way. Got to make sure we end up in a better place and learn from it, I know it’s a long shot but the entire human race has never had a better chance to ‘reboot’. It’s time to change.
I’ve heard this a few times now that the government are beyond reproach and it’s bollocks. There’s even a cast iron example of why it’s bollocks, South Korea. South Korea’s government was forced to take a long hard look at itself and ask some searching questions after SARS and came up with a plan and investment in infrastructure and equipment just in case something like that happened again. Guess what, it happened again. It hit South Korea at the same time it hit Italy and initially South Korea’s curve was steeper, however South Korea had a plan of test test test, identifying those who have it, isolate them, treat them with the equipment they invested in and the results in comparison to Italy are significant. South Korea has only had a hundred and forty odd deaths whereas Italy has past 8000, South Korea has also barely had a lockdown. Definitely. There's a difference between getting behind measures to help (I'm behind all of them) and unquestionable support to the extent that those in power go unchallenged. And lack of competition is a dangerous thing. Tories like to bang on about how competition and the market can achieve an efficient outcome. They also apply that to public services - schools, the NHS etc. But funnily enough, they won't apply it to their own thinking and policies - such policies are considered to be out of discussion. Fair enough that Labour were woeful and could not garner enough support to mount any kind of credible opposition for now.
