If I were to feel rough before a family gathering, COVID times or not, I'm not going over there to give it to everyone else even if I was desperate to meet up with family. As you say even in non-covid times I wouldn't go to my parents if I thought as was ill as I didn't want to pass anything on to them yet people will happily turn up when clearly ill because their Christmas is more important.
