So if it’s 70% less likely to result in hospital admissions, 100k daily cases is as impactful as 30k daily cases in one of the OG variants?

You're obsessed with freedom day mate. That was back in June. Has nowt to do with 120000 cases on 23rd December.

Yeah, a complete roll back of restrictions during an ongoing global pandemic is going to have zero impact.

Pfizer are working on a vaccine targeting the variant which they say will be ready in March. Not sure if ready means ready to start production or ready to go into arms. Lets hope that provides longer protection.

Course it will.

If omicron carries on this way then hopefully it's been and gone by then.

If the booster takes a couple of weeks to kick in. Does that mean 8 weeks?

Critical thinking has gone out the window all of a sudden, eh? Here's the full quote from the BBC...

BBC said:
Two doses of a vaccine were shown to offer limited protection against catching Omicron, which was then restored with a booster dose.
However, the report says this protection drops by between 15% and 25% after 10 weeks. This is still better than having no booster dose and the protection against severe disease or death is likely to be even greater.

While vaccine protection against severe disease from Omicron looks likely to be far more robust, there is uncertainty about what will happen when the variant reaches older age groups. Most of those catching it and going into hospital were under the age of 40.

So, let's disentangle that. Protection against catching it (in entirety!) drops, but does not disappear. That happened with initial vaccines of course, as we knew from Israel. Moreover, protection against severe disease and death more robust.

The caveat is wait and see how Omicron affects older people.

"likely" is the word. How many times have we heard that?

How long do we wait to see if older people get omicron?

Come on Sick boy, that’s nonsense. These case numbers are driven by a totally new far more transmissible variant. France didn’t have ‘freedom day’ yet managed 84k with probably less tests than us yesterday. Germany has been recording 400-500 deaths a day recently and that’s before an anticipated fifth omicron wave.

Also, who’s to say that the people who got natural immunity from catching Covid over summer and autumn when case numbers remained high aren’t helping to reduce/minimise hospitalisations now when hospitals are naturally far more stretched at this time of year ?!

Not sure any judgements can be made until this winter plays out and we hopefully all get through this shitstorm but I for one am glad we had some normality for a few months over the summer before restrictions were re-imposed*

*ive always said I’d have kept mandatory face masks on public transport though

Yeah, in absolute terms it's nonsense, you could certainly argue the rhetoric around it makes it far harder to row back if needs be, however... and that can potentially have a consequence.

Well the one that replicates in two day's is at currently 16k of circa 120 k cases at least I think that's it currently ,so how has Delta which was ultimately under control relatively ballooned to at least double it's level of a month ago?

Yeah, I think people did take a little bit of time to get back into mask wearing routines but to be fair as a Nation I think we have been pretty good....saying that i don’t have to use public transport in peak times etc so might be wrong

What's the accuracy on the "variant" like now? Are they testing everybody to see which variant or just some?

Wonder if by the time it's available and been distributed whether we'll have another variant starting to take over?

Bbc mate, 15-25% drop in effectiveness. Still robust against severe illness.

If it's march it's going to be sneezing when going by fields as a symptom.

Booster will fix that until about June.

Pfizer won't want this to end. Guess they have settlements to pay.
