true, no new domestic cases reported Wednesday, though that's the official line.
But my point is, if things are worse there than reported how bad are they going to be here when we seem to be quite flippant about it.

Got to be honest, I didn't really look too much into the detail of this when it first broke but have started to over the last few days and I'm convinced draconian social distancing is the best way forward and think that is what we should be doing. As much as a ball ache as that will be for everyone.

Yeah I agree - personally I don't think a total lockdown is the answer as realistically it would have to last for possibly over a month in order to be effective and from then on strict social distancing / mass testing would still have to be implemented for several weeks. So by that point you're looking at a couple of months and the UK just won't do that unless it's completely necessary. Even then it's not guaranteed to work - and then it's all for nothing. So, I do understand the government's logic behind not wanting to enforce such strict measures.

Social distancing for a couple of months is most certainly the way forward but stricter measures need to be made as a huge number of people still continue to go to pubs, bars and restaurants. Big mistake by Boris not to enforce closures of such establishments.

Agreed.

Maybe we should all figure out a way forward, get us out of the current jam, then start playing the blame game later.

They've obviously seen something in him to promote him that quickly.

A couple of years as Chancellor and he'll be ready for it I'd say. Of course he has the benefit of standing next to Johnson, who makes anyone around him look competent and confident.

Younger Adults Make Up Big Portion of Coronavirus Hospitalizations in U.S.

Interesting that the US are pushing this story. Perhaps something to do with countless 'college' students still going on spring break despite the repeated warnings?

Equally, I wonder if the country's obesity problem has anything to do with young people getting hospitalised. Would need a larger focus group to ascertain such findings but wouldn't be surprised if that were the case.

It took China that and they were far more proactive and draconian that we have been so far.

I hearing that is completely at odds with so much scientific thought out there and there was many an eyebrow raised last night when he said that.

Have you seen the interviews? "it's not that serious", "i've been studying hard I deserve a break", "we're not in the most dangerous categories".

Yeah I saw it yesterday. Ironically most of the ones that were interviewed looked ill.

Taiwan reacted to this in January. Hence the reason they have had only one death, despite being only 110 miles from the Chinese border.

Do you think Boris is making all the calls?

If the way it is handled is proven to be correct it won't be Boris that made the plans. He will just have listened to the experts giving advice.

I thought people were forcing their grandparents to be in the pub so they could kill them?

At the minute whilst there are no laws to say otherwise, people are at their own risk surely? If people want to sit in a pub with 5 others they risk it, if people want to stand with 100 people in a queue at Tesco they risk it.

All well and good people banging on about others being selfish for going for a pint, there's people shouting in each other's faces over a bog roll.

If those pricks keep taking all of the food then I am going to have to go for a meal in the pub.

Nice to read I’m not alone in my thinking. If anything, the pubs I’ve been in the last few days have been busier than usual.

you think medical experts are telling him to keep pubs and restaurants open and to make statements like we can be on top of this in 12 weeks? I can't see it myself.

I think obviously if somebody is ill it's a completely different story. If somebody rocks up coughing all over everybody and hasn't washed in a week.

Piers Morgan keeps kicking off about people go into the pub.

Just put ITV on, why are they 2 guests sat on the sofa on this morning surrounded by camera men, makeup artists, presenters, sound people etc?

Until pricks like him who have told people to go and stock up pipe the fuck down then everybody will be hysterical.

I wouldn't be surprised if somebody gets attacked for leaving their house and Coronavirus Rage becomes a thing.

I agree and cringed as soon as he said it as we all knew what the headlines would say today. Bearing in mind we are likely (although not certain) to have peaked in the coming weeks, it’s hopefully the case that things will be getting better not worse by then, which I suppose you could argue as turning the tide. Think the send it packing isn’t in 12 weeks, but will leave others to decide. see below.

Full quotes from start and end of press conference below.

start (guardian)
Striking a notably, if cautiously, optimistic note, Johnson said: “I think, looking at it all, that we can turn the tide within the next 12 weeks and I’m absolutely confident that we can send coronavirus packing in this country. But only if we all take the steps that we’ve outlined – that is vital.”

End (bbc)
Speaking in Downing Street, Mr Johnson told reporters: "I believe that a combination of the measures that we're asking the public to take and better testing, scientific progress, will enable us to get on top of it within the next 12 weeks and turn the tide.

I cannot stand here and tell you that by the end of June that we will be on the downward slope.

"It's possible but I simply can't say that that's for certain," he added.

"We don't know how long this thing will go on for. But what I can say is that this is going to be finite."

Boris clarification service : )

In which case why is it OK for the same person to go and scrap in a supermarket or why can I go to work without any symptoms?

Until they make it a full lockdown that is a law then people will still go out at their own risk.

You can't see the difference between going to the supermarket and going to the pub?

It's not really ignorant is it? If you have an ITV presenter whipping up a frenzy then why is it OK for ITV to have random guests talking about country music in a studio with other people?
