What about suicides, people missing cancer treatments, people not being able to get diagnosed with serious illness.
2600 out of 66 million brings it into context.

We can't stay locked up forever for every little variant that comes out. If that's the case then to be honest I can see the suicide rate jumping up as it's no real life to live.

I completely agree but to say we should all decides what’s best is when waves of infection happen. Some of us don’t know better until it’s too late and it’s us on a ventilator or our best mate or mum

Pre vaccine. It’s impossible to continue that strategy when a solution has been found

For how long? With a majority fully vaccinated population within the next 3 months or so I don't think it is justifiable for too much longer.

Are you suggesting that international travel should be ceased entirely, how internationalist of you. Are you still a Labour party member?

I agree and I firmly believe that in the next month cases will rise, but due to the vaccine rollout the deaths and hospitalisations won't follow suit to the extent they did before. That is the vital thing. Before they have and that has put so much pressure on the NHS as a whole it has been having an effect on the things you mention because it's all hands to the pump. If that were to happen again it would have the same outcome on services as if we open up anyway. If it doesn't the roadmap will be adhered to and it will free up the capacity to start these other services (minus some to continue the vaccine rollout).

Other thing we need to watch out for is how long it will take for people to start acting stupid again and we get things like A&E's filled with drunken people or those that've had a scrap while tanked up taking resources from those vital services that've taken a back burner over the last 15 months.

Just as long as the danger is there, once it's not then yes there is no need.

Always going to be there.

Death rate in England the lowest since records began in 2001 last month.

Hopefully people will realise how much scare mongering the media will do because they want attention.

But is that because of, or in spite of, lockdown? How many of those extra that died last year from Covid would've been on this years list from other causes linked to old age?

No really not I’m just saying common sense is bollox. That’s how you end up in a mess. We need clear rationale and clear messaging and then everyone needs to stick to the rules to get through this ASAP. Never have been a member

In fairness, all data prior to the last week has shown the Indian variant still leads to hospitalisation and death of younger people. Of course, it can be argued whether that’s directly due to the variant or whether the conditions in India led to that. Either way, it was right for the scientists and Government to manage expectations when they did. As more data comes through, it seems to suggest there’s no significant difference to those variants we’ve experienced already, so things seem to be realigning to 21st June.

This is why it was daft for everyone to get their knickers in a twist about something that may or may not happen in 5 weeks’ time.

That's the thing, the way some people want to live the rest of their lives I can't see past suicide.

Everything is a risk, I drive my car it's a risk, I cross the road it's a risk, there's a fairly decent chance I will get cancer. That's a risk.

Do people really want to be stuck in their houses for the rest of their lives?

Both my sister and her husband got COVID from petrol pumps and supermarkets.
Having people preach about family members seeing each other after years is ridiculous, especially when everyone’s been vaccinated.

Is it just me that’s been consistently going to the pub since they’ve been open outside and now inside then? And I’ve not been stuck in my house for months.

My point is we aren’t in lockdown anymore. And unless they roll things back we won’t be again hopefully. A lot of the talk in here makes out we are still in lockdown.

I've only been the pub twice, but that's only due to family circumstances. I'd be in on the regular otherwise.

We are in the sense that certain activities are a criminal act but I agree that we are not locked down, and haven't been since May last year when the initial lockdown ended.

It's a bit of a two edged sword.
If the mortality rate has been somewhere around .3-.5.% then applying logic it can only be .1-.2 % after vaccination or less.
On the other hand if it went a bit totalitarian on travel for just one more year with provisio's for safe havens (vaccination passports etc) then I don't really think that would be disastrous apart from the effect on travel, hotels, airports etc.

But you keep saying loads of people are dying from suicide and missed cancer treatments.

The fact that death rates are at their lowest for 20 years would suggest lockdown has worked/is working.

I'm not saying I want another lockdown/lockdown to continue, quite the opposite, but you seem to be making two opposite arguments!

Agree, but i think its the shit like having to book to go into a pub. The rule of 6 (not that i have 6 mates to go pub with), 30 at weddings, not allowed to have a function room party for your 30th/50th whatever, and of course this limited capacity football matches, masks everywhere.

When you look at it like that thats a fair bit that still needs lifting for us to get near normality

Not sure that's right. It was 859.7 last month, only have to go as far back as August to for it to be lower, was 746 then.

Once vaccinated , its going to be very hard to convince the population to continue with lockdowns etc .

Vaccines either work or They don't.

People won't comply

They don't already

I guess the last thing that needs resolving is whether to vaccinate children?
Should a variant come along with less place's to run and not so benign.

I know a few people on here have suggested local lockdowns, but the government has said the reopening is irreversible, and another full lockdown doesn't seem to be on the table. If things have to be delayed a few weeks to avoid a public health emergency, is that really so bad? All this talk of riots in the streets/mass disobedience if June 21 doesn't happen seem a bit entitled, given we have one of the most open economies in the western world right now.

I read that they have a load of Astra Zeneca vaccines in stock but refusing to administer and they're going to go out of date on 30 May. Wasted vaccines is a disgrace.
