Some good news. No reason why June 21st can't go ahead if this is the case....

7 day average remains flat. Rise in infections is expected but there will now be close monitoring of effect on hospitals

Not really considering all the lockdown changes.

How many people are there in the UK and what percentage is 2696?

Exactly this. Schools have been back for a while, people are now mixing a lot more. A jump of 600 throughout a population of over 65m is pretty acceptable tbh...

Cases are always going to rise, what's important is the number of hospitalizations is flat. Stop being so dramatic about a slight rise in the cases

This amber countries mess is ridiculous. Everytime someone from the government speaks they give a different answer.

Now they've fallen back to leave it to people to use their own judgement and I think we all know how well that will work.

Would seem to be a better system to just have a Green and Red system.

I agree with people using their own judgement to be honest rather than imposing draconian rules. The government's role is to make sure people are vaccinated and provide clear information about the risks. I think the lockdown rules were appropriate for a time but you can't be criminalising everyday activity for a long time.

Ive reading something similar which would be great news. Although everyone (in particular the media !) needs to appreciate/accept that the virus will continue to mutate, with the more transmissible variants likely to become the dominate strain in most countries. From my limited scientific knowledge, that’s just the way it is.

We have to accept this and just keep ploughing out the vaccines and hope that they continue to work against all variants, at least to a level that stops serious/severe illness and death. Although test and trace was a shitshow to start with, the genomic sequencing capabilities, together with increased testing capacity, surge testing etc, also gives me a bit of comfort (I was speaking to a mate who had to travel to Switzerland for work and on his return he not only had calls but a visit to check he was isolating).

Would be amazing if the data supports the continuation on the road map. Fingers crossed !

What is ridiculous is not letting people using their own judgement and allowing the state to continue to control peoples lives and decision making

Agree with this 100%. Its time to live our lives again, this new variant isn't more deadly and the vaccines work.

There are obviously specific factors which appeared to show that the Indian variant was more transmissible, it is the same specific factors that saw high transmission of the wild type covid in the same communities.

That's fine but abolishing the traffic light system is a totally different argument. Personally I don't think allowing a free for all from places like India and any others in a similar situation is a good idea but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

However at the moment we do have a traffic light system which is pointless if you're then going to tell people to just 'apply common sense' and every day you have a different minister saying something different.

In just the last couple of days you've had the Business Secretary saying he ' wouldn't be recommending people travelling to amber list countries' for holidays, followed by the PM saying the position was 'very clear' and 'you should not be going to an amber list country on holiday'. Today its the Transport Secretary saying to 'apply common sense'. How hard is it to have them all parrot the same simple message?

Yet when it comes to election time any interviewer will only be able to get the three CCHQ approved lines out of any Tory MP

Yeah it’s ridiculous. I’ve not seen my parents and wider family since December 2019 - if they’ve been vaccinated and I’ve had a first dose or both by September why can’t we see each other?

I'd say it is very much the governments job to impose rules that make sure we don't reimport and reseed covid-19 in the UK

If all else fails says its up to people to make up their own mind so you can blame it on the stupidity of their stupidty.

But of course that can't be because it's labour that treats the working class like they're stupid...

It's a get out clause to blame the people if it goes wrong, nothing more. If it's all fine they'll take the credit for being brave and liberal.

Agree, it’s obviously more transmissible (and by all accounts will become dominant strain here and the rest of the world...until another new variant probably comes along). The question is how much more transmissible and was the increased spread due to other factors as well as transmissibility. Only time will tell I guess

Failures in England's test-and-trace system are partly responsible for a surge in the Indian variant in one of the worst affected parts of the country, a report seen by the BBC says.

Covid: Test and Trace failure helped Indian variant spread, report says

Several councils did not receive up-to-date Covid data for almost three weeks, the BBC learns.
