It might be uncomfortable to hear, but some protests have received an 'allow it' status. It pisses me off because when I stick to the rules, others clearly haven't bothered. This particular protest I don't agree with either (just for the record).

There is, or at least was at one point, an exemption for protests in the rules. However the protests are supposed to be organised and enforce social distancing & mask wearing which a lot have attempted, to varying degrees of success.

At the risk of opening a can of worms this was a very different thing with zero social distancing or mask wearing. There's even footage online of protesters trying to rip masks off people wearing them.

What I can't get my head around is the police response. Whatever you think of things like BLM or the Sarah Everard vigil the police response was very different to what was seen here. Footage online of the police being attacked by protesters and running away being chased yet the Met puts out a tweet saying 'thank you to everyone', very bizarre.

Its not some protests its pretty much all of them, and that includes gatherings by football supporters like when we all went to Broadgate to celebrate.
The Sarah Everard vigil and the nurses protesting were the only one where they seemed to decide they were going to enforce the rules.
Some of those nurses have 10k fineshanging over them.

Agree with most of the points both of you make.

There have been different approaches and different acceptance levels for different protests. Some from the establishment and police, others from the public.

I couldn't really give a fuck what the protest is about to be honest. There is a pandemic. Should be zero tolerance on everything in my opinion. After that, sure, do your protest as long as it is peaceful.

He's the biggest arsehole in a government rife with them.

I'm almost willing to give the likes of Johnson and JRM a bit of leeway because their privileged upbringing gives them that mindset. Gove however was in care in Scotland and was adopted. He literally relied on the goodwill of strangers who owed him nothing to not end up just being another kid lost in the system. Yet he's the most self-centred dickhead going. No doubt he sees where he's got to as down to nothing but his own hard-work and abilities.

They’re all like that though. At the heart of Tory ideology is the idea wealthy people are deserving of their wealth because they’re better than others. The flip side of that is those who aren’t wealthy also deserve their fate.

See also tin pot Tories like G going on about how he pulled himself up by his bootstraps and kids today don’t know the meaning of hard work, despite the mountains of evidence against him. Once it’s personal people will believe any old bollocks to protect their ego.

I voted for them in the thatcher years - I was “president” of my university society and remember attended a meeting with a load of boring unfortunates who were demanding a big collection for the miners and the Marxist Scargill. I offered an alternate motion to collect for the police - I made a lot of friends that day.

And yet, not so long ago, possibly in this thread, you went off on a rant about how kids today don’t know the meaning of hard work and you pulled yourself up by the bootstraps.

Vote for who you like, it’s the same mindset.

Michael Gove was a communist at Uni I believe. A well worn path

Edit: looked it up, a Labour supporter at school, a Conservative at Uni. Close enough.

There is a very good reason student politics used to be kept in a hermetically sealed box away from voters.

I vaguely remember being at a flat party full of Tories convincing me not to believe the ‘tripe’ and ‘codswallop’ that the recession was global rather than Gordon Brown’s entire making.

Most of the Spiked/Brexit lot are former RCP members. Something about the far left to establishment Conservative position.

Just heard Peston on the radio, he's spoken to 2 sources who aren't the one the leaked it that heard him say it. He said this isn't going away and at some point someone will go on record.

Johnson 'did make bodies pile high in their thousands' comment, writes Peston | ITV News

Downing Street has issued a straight denial that the prime minister ranted in that extreme way about how there would never be a third lockdown. | ITV National News

there's also a suggestion that Cummings latest blog which put the boot in was written in a very different style to usual and was a lot more professional than his usual output.

Exactly. They’re protesting that our government hasn’t/isn’t doing an India even though as we speak India is paying the very expensive price for not behaving like our government. It’s a completely idiotic train of thought and there’s enough evidence to back up how idiotic these idiots are.

Coronavirus: EU sues AstraZeneca over vaccine delivery delays - BBC News

Do these cretins not understand that primary manufacture of vaccines, medicines or whatever else technical is often beset by issues that are complex in nature and take time to solve?

I always vote for the government I believe offers competence and substance and freedom for the individual - the 80’s was a very easy choice when the opposition was firstly a long past his best socialist with his strings pulled by Wedgwood Benn and then the incompetent welsh windbag

I guess we'll never know. I don't personally consider people more 'free' if for all of the civil liberties they are granted they don't earn enough to enjoy them in the first place.

C+ you’ve done better.

Seriously though “individual freedom”? What do you think literally every political movement ever was trying to achieve? You think people are voting for less freedom?

“Substance”, “competence”, again, literally every voter ever votes for this stuff.

The point you’re spectacularly missing is the entire endeavour of politics exists because these are subjective and competing concepts.
