He doesn't need to, Boris has already said it.

Whitty's role has developed into tempering overexcitement, so that people don't start flouting the rules. If they all jusy stood there and said how amazing everything is, people would start doing what ever they want.

Their aim at the mo is to stop people just going bonkers. If they stood there beaming and saying how great the figures are (which they certainly are!), then a significant percentage would instantly drop their guard.

They know this is their last chance of people following a lockdown (see Merkel's u-turn), so need people to see this one through.

Ha yer, me too. Mid-40s, no jab. Reckon I'll be getting the Moderna one as Pfizer/Astra will be going to second dosers.

I'll take Moderna. Don't fancy the single shot one too much as the figures aren't all that compared to the others but hey, I'll be guinea pig for Moderna.

But just get a move on ya goons. If you want me out and about in June, get the fuck on with it!

By June Novavax will hopefully be on the go too. Moderna has been widely used in the US also, pretty safe and effective.

Can’t do it, but still think we should go up the ages once this group is done. 18-30 will be responsible for a huge amount of the spread and deaths 30-50 are minimal. As it’s total cases rather deaths were concerned about now seems to make sense.

Needs must with reduced supplies, second jabs have to take priority if it's a choice between the two. When supplies are back up I don't have an issue with waiting further down the queue to keep it going down the ages.

I was asked this in a lesson today, I know they're doing trials on it so until the data's in from them then not any time soon.

We’ve been told it could be something that will be available Aug/Sept if results from trials are positive.

Pretty much all my mates who’ve had the vaccine live in Wyken and predominately are registered at the Forum Health Centre. Maybe it’s just as simple as a location or demographics thing?

As an example my SiL literally turned 40 just over two weeks ago and she had hers yesterday.

You’ll get yours soon!

Maybe a low demographic of the higher risk groups round there so they're getting through them quicker.

In an ideal world it would make sense but could you imagine the logistical nightmare of sorting it all out and then who deserves what and by why you are assessing them on as priority, job, weight, health etc.

If it’s any consolation one of the people I know who got one of the waiting list doses is a teacher in a Cov who has just turned 30.

I know this will annoy some people but for him it was a simple case of when his Mum went to get her vaccine she knew one of the people working there and she got chatting and talked about her son teaching etc. and they agreed to add him on the list if there were any spares. Think he got a phone call about 10 days later and went in and got jabbed.

9.7 million doses done so far in Italy with over 3 million vaccinated - definitely picking up the pace now.

tbh I've got no problem with teachers, volunteers etc getting the thing first - they're the ones being stuck in the riskiest situations atm

Tbh after the oldies I do think they should have gone through teachers, police, pharmacists, etc... I don't think it would have been that hard to sort out.

Wonder if other countries copied the 12 week gap? If they didn't it gives them scope to catch up and get people fully vaccinated before us. Although obviously its not a race against each other, we're going to need countries to be vaccinated before we open travel back up.

Are they picking up the pace in the US as well? Seeing people over there in their 40s getting jabbed.

No, here there is not the 12 week gap - the total number of vaccinated people is not actually far behind the UK.

I think the USA is smashing through but I saw something yesterday on the news here about them being on the verge of yet another wave as the country is more or less fully opened up.

This is what the Gov showed yesterday in briefing. Two charts with two different axis

Someone has put both sets of data in with the same axis and its far far less scary then shown in the briefing.

At the risk of repeating myself however... the risk of hospitalisation among over 40s is great enough that, that's why it would be pretty crazy to remove masks and distancing before they and others have been vaccinated. If you remove all obstacles to transmission, it makes it virtually certain you'll catch the thing, meaning a far higher rate of transmission, to result in higher admissions.

I was commenting more on the roll out of the vaccine finally picking up pace over here - the strategy like the rest of the world has been to concentrate on the the two doses in the recommended timeframe.
