Even if the UK was still in the EU, it would have still sourced its own vaccine as it rarely took part in these types of programme.

In any case, the vaccine orders were made during the transition period, the UK was given the chance to join the EU vaccination procurement and decided not to. Nothing at all to do with Brexit.

As for a nurse at the hospital, they've had fuck all to do with the vaccination programme.

No we certainly would have told the Eu to do one and go it alone and would have been massively criticised for not using the Eu huge economies of scale

Low vaccination rates in Europe could affect UK if people travel abroad, scientists warn

But Downing Street insisted that the UK had 'strong measures' at the border that would curb any imported surges

The UK faces a third wave of coronavirus later this year if European vaccination rates remain low and summer holidays abroad go ahead, leading scientific advisers to the Government have warned.

On current rates in the Eu some countries won’t be vaccinated till 2023 if you were in charge Would you cancel all foreign travel for two years?

Exactly.

Dr Hillary was banging on about hospitalisations in 40 year olds next, as the latest form of scaremongering.

If the vaccine is doing its job then there is generally very little to worry about.

they will and the risk of death is minuscule - it’s less than dying of a reaction to paracetamol and about as likely as a plane crash on the way to a holiday

Well I think they will and even if not it’s not going to cause any significant issues as any who are at risk in those groups will have had a vaccine. You can’t hide under a table forever

Does anybody have any data as to how many people under 40 have died from covid, it would help gauge the level of the potential problem should we not be vaccinated by summer

Well this was about over 40.

FWIW, if a vaccine is 80% reliable then, to protect at risk groups, you need to stamp transmission down too. That means vaccinating all people who want it - the fabled heard immunity was 60% of the population being immune.

Now, to an extent, you can probably do without that if the vaccine results in people not becoming seriously ill. Ultimately, that's the aim.

As it stands, however, 49yos will not be vaccinated before the summer.

Once all the 10 vulnerable groups have had both doses I think we should be able to open up pretty much everything and travel to certain safe countries.

Behind a couple weeks (134,256 registrations up to 5 March 2021). Around 73% of all COVID-19 deaths have occurred among people aged 75 years and over.

And we've also been shut up for just about all of that, meaning transmission among people has been relatively low.

Open it up and yes, the risk declines the younger you get but the volume will increase if unchecked transmission, to compensate. And surely you have a certain sympathy for the 49yos? It was this very thread where some where criticising the German decision to delay the Oxford vaccine for over 65s, as they'd give it to 64yos!

I get the desire for normality but, it does feel very much like it's not an in it together anymore.

To clarify, I'm not against certain restrictions being lifted, just the free-for-all as if nothing has happened coming too soon.

All at risk under 50s have been vaccinated - I know some under 21 who have. The non health issue deaths are below 200 in this category - I honestly don’t get your point
