That’s an individual decision. The government have to take a population decision and on the stats even if it doesn’t work this prevents more deaths in the population.

Let’s hope it proves to be the case in the long-term!

You know the data better than me but all the evidence we’ve had so far (AZ trial, antibody presence in people who had caught COVID prior to first jab) is suggesting it’s the right reasoning.

We have excellent data too. We’ve been running long term antibody tests so know a lot about how quickly people lose immunity.

Regardless, the official reasoning was even if it doesn’t work having more people slightly protected was better than having fewer people more protected.

The thing is that 6 weeks was already pushing it to the maximum gap Pfizer’s data was reliable up to, and we’ve doubled it. An educated punt is still a punt and seeing as the first recipients were the most vulnerable of all, it’s higher risk than I would like.

Again we only switched to this idea once the numbers started turning for the worse. I defended the decision on the basis of ‘protect more a bit than fewer fully’ but only because the situation demanded it

Apparently az giving side effects in Eu. Wonder why it’s not being talked about in uk? Nothing too serious though

What are the side effects though? It seems they encourage you here to register if you get a sore arm after somebody jabs a needle into it. I wouldn't call that a particularly worrying side effect myself!

Well unless the actual supply rate ramps up quickly many people in the Eu will struggle to get vaccinated even once by the end of this year - long term isn’t an issue anyway as boosters I assume are required at some point as well

Side effects of mild symptoms happen with the flu vaccine as well and are evidence of the immune system responding

Yeah it’s a punt, but equally choosing to let people die if you’ve got a good idea this’ll work is equally a punt.

Honestly think it’s the smartest thing they’ve done all pandemic and they’ll be justified. But as I said at the start, we’re all just guessing both ways until the data is in.

Also, again, if it doesn’t work and we’ve injected a bunch of people with only 60% instead of 95% protection, that still saves more lives in the short term and buys us time for other developments.

Right, I’m not disagreeing with the decision as I supported it when it was made. My only point is we were forced into this because we’d handled the outbreak so poorly

Yeah I can agree there. If we were in NZ I’d be all for taking out time. But we are where we are really.

My girlfriend had a sore and swollen arm after the second jab and a mild temperature. Her grandmother has had both doses and no symptoms whatsoever

COVID-19: Vaccine doses shouldn't be more than six weeks apart, scientist behind Pfizer-BioNTech jab says

He's just stating the obvious though really and the UK govt tbf has in its assessment of risk and benefit that a 3 month gap makes sense. If one dose is stopping serious illness then the UK govt will be vindicated. Appreciate that he wants to see evidence if efficacy beyond 3 weeks, I'm pretty surprised Pfizer hasn't tested that itself

I'm absolutely no fan of the Tory govt and think they've handled this horrendously, but I do trust the government scientific advisors, especially given the UK's relative strength in this sector.

Fresh stupidity emerging from Scotland with proposals for distancing of all pupils, not just of putting the teacher in a box as the previous norm. This isn’t close to a decent education and is not worth rushing back for. Wait till the summer term for Christ’s sake

As I keep saying, the education being received in schools is heavily compromised because the teacher is so restricted in what they are able to do. Add in that kids spread it around within year groups like nobody's business and the idea has minimal educational benefit and will send transmission right back up.

If you further restrict what the children can do even if they are in bubbles then the benefit is even lower.

Turns out I’ve been living with a pseudo Covid denier. Apparently not been as many deaths as is being made out. When I explained about the excess deaths and how that works, I was told “well that’s my opinion and I’m entitled to it”.

My opinion is now that grass is orange.

My kids are saying that home learning is no different to school at the moment. Aside from seeing their friends on a daily basis.

Where would you stand on refusing to send your kids and insisting that they continue to learn remotely until the adults in the house have been fully vaccinated?

Not sure what the common sense is in forcing lockdown to end early is. I now personally know 4 people who’ve had it, 1 died, 1 got over it in a weekend pretty much but the other 2 look to be suffering from long Covid. The latter being an unknown and seems to get more common with the new strains. My worry is the long term pressure on the NHS. If some of these people need care for years. IIRC 1 in 20 are getting long Covid, most for 3 months after being initially infected but many don’t seem to be shaking it. How bad you got it in the first place doesn’t seem to matter either.

I don’t have children, but I would support it for secondary age ones. The difference between a remote lesson with cameras on and a physical one where the teacher can’t go and help students or even hand a worksheet out is negligible. Same for the social side if they are going to be distanced from friends.

In my case where practical work is effectively banned, there is no meaningful difference and with weaker students it is actually much easier for me to give them 1:1 help online than in a classroom where others are there and I can’t walk over.
