They can fuck off with this and the repeated bullshit about kids being 'left behind' by teachers

I’d be all for a conversation with our teaching profession, bit different announcing it’s going to happen and telling the teaching profession to get on with it

Not gonna happen this no matter what they write. Term times and holidays already agreed and in place. Best they could think about is forward planning and think about adjusting next years schedule if they were concerned about potential rises in cases next winter.

It was something I was talking about in like August last year. Why did they not think about doing it at that point? Another example of complete indecision.

All it needs to do is prevent serious illness and there is no sign that this has changed.

Yeah. Obv not a long term solution, but it'll do for the medium.

If it stops my Mum and Dad getting seriously ill, that'll do.

Also it isn't going to take long (in vaccine terms) to prep a modified Oxford vaccine to beat this variant. Until then we need to be right on top of who's entering the country

I dunno, just fucking sick of it now.

Was alright first time round. Really struggling now. Weekends and weekdays roll into one. I work from home so going from one room to another has lost its novelty.

Used to take the kids to the games, see mates for a pint, have something to look forward too.
Now its a weekend walk.

Kids now sick of board games, disney plus hide and seek etc. This needs to end and end soon because i know a lot of us are struggling this time round

Your age but no kids. We're on screens pretty much from when we wake up to go to sleep, and it's making us both tense as fuck. Worst thing is this isn't even the worst of it, March will be hell for us if they half reopen schools.

AZ are reckoning the autumn for new vaccine variant which would function as a booster shot rather than one requiring two doses I believe. Provided they keep an iron clad grip on the cases with this new variant we should be able to hold it off. Would also add that it works fundamentally in the same way as the Pfizer one.

The preliminary data is just from 2,000 patients in Phase I/II, it needs to be established what the effect is on serious illness before we start panicking. Says a lot I am more relaxed about COVID vaccines than CCFC

The missus is clinging to being able to have a semi normal wedding in the summer to keep her going through the ridiculous workload, it's why I'm praying they don't reopen the schools too soon because that will fuck the summer good and proper.

For the scientists on here is it right that people are talking about vaccines in absolute terms, saying they work or don't work?

Is there not a sliding scale, I mean a week off work with manageable symptoms is a lot different to ending up in hospital for weeks and potentially dying but they both seem to be classed as vaccines not working.

All joking aside it is slightly concerning that the things experts are saying need to be done to deal with variants are essentially the same things that were being talked out this time last year that we've pretty much failed to implement.

Controlling borders and enforced quarantine, an effective track and trace system working up and down the chain of transmission and mass testing with quick results aren't exactly new ideas and 12 months in we don't really seem to have got to grips with implementing those things.

There are different ways of measuring efficacy. The most rigid standard would be efficacy against infection, the minimum we are interested in is efficacy against serious illness. As the primary aim is to prevent overburden of the NHS, while we would very much like 'you won't even get infected', we can tolerate 'you won't have to go to hospital'.

Problem with the South African variant is we haven't established that Oxford can even meet that requirement.

This couldn't be any further from the truth......

My kids school (as a common example) has more than 1/2 its pupils in.....they're the ones getting educated....the rest are fed scraps via pdf....

Mine are getting recorded lessons in addition to my help in the lesson itself plus work marked and returned electronically. More of my time is spent chasing people who can’t be bothered to log in
