The vaccines for Covid weren’t even from scratch were they? I’m sure I read they were changes from an already agreed method.

Edit: Found it

And it obviously bodes well for any changes in the virus as any changes to the vaccine will be “easy”.

Fair enough, don't know why I thought otherwise!

It shows how 'easy' it is to make slight changes and gives hope on the future of something more permanent becoming available as more establishments look for a cure. But we still don't know the long term protection given by the present vaccinations being given.

Pretty sure if people followed current restrictions properly (and those that can WFH, actually do), numbers should start to decrease. Unfortunately the main word in that sentence is ‘if’ ! Only caveat is then minimising hospital spread which has been high

Looking at the movement stats for first three days of current lockdown v March lockdown both driving and walking are up c50% !

ps BSB and Astute (and others obviously) following your immunity chat above you might be interested in reading the article/interview in Sunday times with Neil Ferguson regarding immunity/vaccinations etc. Interesting

Have been taking in the details from several sources. Gets you through a long night shift. Just shows how much of a knife edge we are on. But it does look beatable.

Indeed we don't, hence the anxiety around this delay of the second jab for the Pfizer vaccine especially. The Oxford vaccine in its earlier trials didn't convincingly prevent infection, but it did eliminate symptoms. Which is about all we need it to do at the moment.

Times reporting that supermarket staff could legally be required to enforce Covid rules in store. Bloody madness. These guys have been at work all the way through (unless shielding), get paid shite wages, and are now expected to incite the nutters by asking them to wear a mask.

Any keyworker who has had to go in throughout the pandemic should get some reward, a tax-break of a few grand or something. Might not help the lowest paid though to be fair.

It has been like it for nearly a year.

Maybe none of the cunts in charge have ever been in a Tesco and seen it?

Nobody is going to listen to somebody who works there, the people already being pricks will just be pricks to the staff.

Think this will be aimed at supermarket owners/managers to get them to try to enforce distancing. Going back a few months they were limiting numbers, plenty of sanitiser to wipe your trolley down on the way in, more staff on tills to process customers shopping quickly (and stop unnecessary queuing) and in turn a better respecting of distancing.

In recent weeks you can rock up, no queue, no limiting of numbers, empty sanitiser bottles, less staff on tills so more congregating. Supermarkets basically trying to short cut the rules. It’s right that they should be reminded of their responsibility (it’s up to senior management to implement the systems/processes so shop floor don’t even need to get involved ! Most have security guards so they can enforce rules if required)

ps I’d have supermarket workers up the vaccine priority list by the way, along with teachers (ie below health workers/very high risk but before general population under 55)

Merseyside Police say majority of people did not break Covid-19 rules before Marine-Tottenham FA Cup tie

Hundreds of fans turned out to welcome the Marine and Tottenham team arrivals for their FA Cup match; Merseyside Police said: The vast majority of people present were adhering to social-distancing measures and those who were not were advised by officers

How can police start dishing out fines but then allow this? It's a fucking joke.

Yet police want to try and fine 2 women for having a walk in the countryside?

I think the short answer is that the police don’t have the resources to police a mass turnout like this but they do to police Sharon and Tracey breaking lockdown rules on their own in a park.

no he's not loving it.
It was a very sensible interview which as well as some doom and gloom contained some positives.
I'd rather hear the truth than the disingenuous bluster and bollocks we hear from politicians which they then have to renege on a week later and put people on an even bigger downer.
We were hitting over a thousand deaths a day last week mate, if you or your loved ones weren't part of that statistic then be grateful.

He's trying to get across the seriousness of the situation. I don't see the issue here? With Boris promising this that and the other it's good that we have someone sensible willing to say it how it is. I doubt he expected to become a household name when taking this job on but he's handled it and himself very well, unlike many ministers.

ps the two girls having a distanced walk outside didn't warrant a fine

Yeah, I'm sure the guy who was working on respiratory wards over Christmas can hardly contain his joy at this pandemic generating unprecedented levels of death on his watch, due to policies that he has little direct control over. What an arsehole.

Do you think a thousand deaths is an accurate value? If so, we are making up around 10% of worldwide deaths a day. Either these scientists and politicians have fucked up so badly that this figure is accurate, or they are massively over inflated.

Also in regards to people dying of COVID. I've had 2 close family members die of COVID, so yes I am grateful that this week the rest aren't part of this statistic.

All in the name of profit ! They’ve had a free run with a lot of other shops being closed, the least they can do is make it safer for staff and customers ! Sure they’ll raise there game now but should’ve been done weeks ago

sorry to hear about your family members.
Yes, I do trust the death figures, I'm not saying they're 100% accurate but I don't think they'll be massively out.
But as Witty said in his interview we now have a path to get out of this, we just need to hang in there for a few months. I know it seems an age but it will soon go.

1k is an under play due to the arbitrary "within 28 days of a test" rule, it'll be roughly 15-20% higher

The frustrating thing for me is how lax the rules got in the summer. Do you think we were all naive as a nation to think that we had gotten over the worst of it. I was just speaking to a friend about how much people were able to do then compared to now.

to me the biggest issue was not locking down sooner in autumn and winter. Johnson, not for the first time, hesitated. A few weeks earlier could have saved a lot of lives.
And keeping London in tier 2 was criminal.

Frankly, I believe about 99% of the "legitimate exemptions" for people not wearing a mask are utter bullshit.

Just ban entry to all supermarkets without a mask. No ifs ,no buts, no mask, no entry.

The supermarkets can spend some of their covid bonanza profits to employ some of the thousands of security & door staff that have fuck all else to do as all the bars, pubs & clubs are closed down.

Is anyone else starting to feel throughly depressed by it all.

You look online and see in Florida packed theme parks. Americans Jetting off all over the Caribbean.

Yet here we are sat in an endless merry go round of lockdowns.
