Here's a question.
If countries that suppressed the outbreak to zero or thereabouts had hoped to wait it out and vaccinate a way back to normality at risk of losing that option if enough time elapses for more significant mutations?

What's stopping people coming into the country going to do? The variant's already here.

Unless it's going to be a NZ-style total travel ban with mandatory, government-enforced quarantines for all exceptions (dream on) then it won't do much. That ship has long since sailed.

Did it import ?
The SA one did, where's the next coming from?

Travel bans are rarely as strict as they're made out to be. There are always exceptions for UK nationals returning from overseas, so unless you quarantine them all at the point of entry then it won't stop foreign strains from coming here. And just the act of announcing travel bans encourages people to travel while they still can (look at Christmas at King's Cross etc), or even worse, bend the rules to reach the country in ways that aren't so easy to monitor. So while a NZ-style ban can be effective, a US/UK-style ban won't help much, especially after this much time. If they really wanted to make it better, they would start enforcing quarantines, or at least insist on negative test results to enter the country.

They had tiers 1-3, which were the second set of tiers they were keen to stress weren't the same as the original tiers 1-3, added a tier 4, now they've got back to levels 1-5 which we had to start off with but they abandoned when they couldn't keep to their own rules on what each level meant and when it would change. And they wonder why people are confused.

Nadhim Zahawi was appointed and announced as a new health minister in mid November.
his role was to mastermind and supervise the rollout of the Covid19 vaccine.
I don’t think I’ve seen him anywhere since

Pretty sure the majority want to send their kids to school , my wife is a headteacher and sent out an email today asking for a list of critical workers .. last lockdown they had 12 kids at most .. so far today 80+ replies and growing saying that that are critical workers and that their children need to attend school if there is a lockdown

Thats what I don't quite get...talk of more restrictions ?! T4 is pretty much everything locked down and cases are still rising rapidly. Are they taking any behaviour science advice anymore ?! They need people to buy into the restrictions already in place as well as close schools (T3), tell employers that people have got to WFH unless totally unable to do so and keep elderly off the streets/out of shops - the last two should’ve been pushed far more aggressively a lot earlier (with assistance put in place for food deliveries for elderly).

Mad.
Heard they also banned alcohol in South Africa during lockdown.
Would be civil war if they tried that here

Assuming this is going to be an increased lockdown, although I'm not sure how much more locked down I can be when we're already at 'don't leave the house' level, they really need to give details of what is going on with vaccinations. How many doses we have now and what deliveries we are expecting along with what number we can currently get done a week and clear details and how and when that will be ramped up.

More chance of people sticking to any rules if they have a clear idea of when things are likely to improve.

It’s got to be shops that are doing it. Are people really just ignoring stuff and popping round peoples houses that much? I went to Aldi today by Cov airport and it was complete and utter carnage.

Edit: Fully appreciate me being there is part of the problem. But I needed eggs*
