Kidding or not , it's actually taken 3 months Steve so guess it reflects the reality of concluding on what is actually happening.Sounds like literally all bets are off in terms of previous restrictions/tier plans. Even talk of schools being closed for January as they think it ‘might’ transmit more easily between kids compared to previous strains/variants. Guess they’ll know more following further research now they know what they’re looking for/at.
By all accounts we might have shot ourselves in the foot a bit by actually having very good genomic surveillance/kind of testing that can spotted the sequencing changes (all above my GCSE science knowledge maybe BSB or other science bods will know more ?). Apparently we do way more Genomic surveillance than most/all other countries. Could’ve even started elsewhere but nobody else has spotted it til now.
Let’s hope it’s not as bad as first feared and transmission isn’t as rapid as they have modelled. As BSB mentioned and by all accounts it’s no more dangerous. Makes the AZ/Oxford vaccine sign off even more important though....let’s all hope this happens in coming days !

Yes and as I was thinking last night, don't want too many staff off that are manufacturing the vaccine.Some front line nhs staff up here have already had the jab but it rolls out officially on 4th Jan.....let's hope they dont delay it with more admin fuck ups as were gonna need them all at work to fight this 3rd wave.....just hope they (and our condemned hospital) can cope....

I agree, but I think possibly the logistics of administering may be an issue and they'll be conscious of over promising. I'm sure in reality the NHS will get out as many as they possibly can. Also by limiting you have to remember how many pricks we have in society. You can imagine the queue jumping and downright anarchy complaining that someone had theirs before someone else who didn't and how in whatever way they perceive 'that's not fair'. I think putting into bands where everyone knows the order prevents some of that and at least people know what window they're in. Hopefully as it goes on every window can be brought forward.Blair makes some good points in his article. Be interested to know FP’s take but been told by the wife of a friend who works fairly high up in the NHS that general consensus within NHS management that the government are deliberately overplaying the new strain card as a get out of jail free card because they didn’t lockdown soon enough, didn’t lockdown long enough, shouldn’t have called the Xmas bonanza, shouldn’t have put London into tier 2 and numerous other mistakes over the last couple of months leading to numbers running away.
The overplaying which has now led to chaos all around the country.

I don’t think that the government advisors are in on it at all. Their job is to advise not govern. Is there a new strain,yes. They advised. Does it behave differently to previous strains, yes. To be fair they have trained up a huge number of people to administer the vaccine beyond nurses. As the less sensitive vaccines are approved and rolled out the easier it will get. Just this Pfizer one that needs the second jab

You have to remember this is the same government that didn’t react soon enough in the first wave despite the advice coming from SAGE, alternative SAGE and a whole raft of experts. The same government who didn’t react as quickly as the devolved governments when SAGE held a press conference before half term. Northern Ireland went back into lockdown and extend half term to two weeks, for instance. The same government that put London into tier two when numbers were still rising and London has now practically gone from tier two to tier four. All of this against the advice of SAGE, they weren’t in on it then and they aren’t in on it now. Their remit ends at advise, any under reaction or over reaction is down to government and how they govern.

I'm sure you've spent a decent amount of energy this year arguing with people claiming there's something untoward going on, the science doesn't add up, the authorities aren't to be trusted etc. Now you're doing the exact same thing by spreading rumours from a friend of a friend.

I’ve always trusted the science, I don’t believe that the government has. I believe that when the science smacks the government in the face the second time they act and its too late. The government has always been reactive not proactive. The government learned the sum total of fuck all from the first lockdown. The government wasted the first lockdown and the time it brought especially in preparing schools for a return, testing and track and trace.
The problem from the start has been the government not their scientific advisors, governments govern, advisors advise.
You've got to admit though that the government having Tier 4 places neighbouring Tier 2 ones is illogical. It's of course only coincidental that the Tier 2 places are basically all Tory constituencies.“The tier decisions are not ones that are for me, but I will say that the evidence in this virus is it spreads easily, it's more transmissible, we absolutely need to make sure we've got the right level of restrictions in place. I'm no fan of the government response, far from it. But to start suggesting that things aren't as they seem (because you heard it from a friend of a friend!) is the same kind of conspiracy hearsay nonsense that covid truthers have been peddling all year. It just undermines the huge public health effort that's needed here, and that the scientists are calling for. You can already see other people in this thread saying they think it's all a convenient smokescreen etc.
