...also, WHERE is it, as EU member states can override the European council recommendations in theory, should they wish to...which they obviously will.

We were lucky to sneak in a week in Greece in between the travel bans so I guess the almighty will cancel something else to even it out.

I will have been vaccinated by then, why would they try and stop people travelling who've been vaccinated?
Maybe Bill Gates will suppress my will to travel using the chip they've put in me anyway?

Looks like it depends on transmission rates. We’ve been doing the same with all EU nations since the summer anyway ?!! ie adding and removing countries from travel corridor. It says

‘EU member states can override the European council recommendations in theory, should they wish to’

So, presume any big UK tourist destinations will apply unless crazy transmission rates. In any event, if situation remains the same:

‘The Foreign Office currently advises against all nonessential travel to most of Europe, bar some holiday destinations such as certain Greek islands, and quarantine on return is required for those who choose to travel’

Typical media negative non story ! Like with all holidays, next year looks better but likely to be playing it by ear

Edit - looks like I’m late to the party with comments (stuck on a call before sending)

Yeah tbf holidays are the least of my brexit issues tbh. it is what it is - plenty of places in this country worth visiting if it's a must, and it can't be *more* disrupted than this year for holidays, anyway!

Come on Dom, you should learn by now that setting expectations is not a good thing to do (depending on your definition of spring).

In any case, best thing for people to do next year is holiday in the UK if a mass vaccination is ongoing.

Yeah...you're right.

The Portuguese, Greeks, Spanish etc. would never ever consider over-riding EU guidance in order to support their own tourism industries. Absolutely. They would never do that. Ever.

Why are the media shocked London has high rates? They had high rates anyway but were given relaxed lockdown while most other places were Tier 3.

Of course its a shock, absolutely no way anyone could have predicted this.

Same as nobody could have predicted numbers going up when bars & restaurants were opened, or when students were packed off to Uni, or when kids went back to school. Get ready for the 'how did this happen' when the numbers shoot up after the Christmas 'week off' from restrictions.

Given it happened this year in Greece.

Coronavirus: Greece extends travel ban on UK visitors for two weeks

British holidaymakers will have to wait until 15 July, unless restrictions are extended further.

Unfortunately it was always going to happen Dave. To be fair, I think when bars/restaurants reopened (4 July) and then hairdressers, salons etc (mid July) numbers stayed comparatively flat. Daily cases took almost a couple of months to double from around 600 to 1200. The difference then though was most people could still mingle outside. It appeared to shoot up when people returned from hols, unis/schools went back and then continued as weather worsened.

That coupled with the fact that a lot of people are now bending the rules so we’ll continue to have these spikes (and tightening of restrictions) well into next year. January is fortunately a time when people usually mix less which may help...albeit return of uni students will probably offset that benefit

I hope the message is clear for over the Christmas period. As I’ve said I think it should be each families own choice ie not illegal to meet up, but I hope people are sensible around higher risk relatives
