The damage done by schools closing for 6 months was catastrophic, especially in deprived areas. We must never do that again.

I think you're completely wrong there as you're looking at it in isolation from what was happening with the virus spreading in March / April. It was absolutely necessary as even having done it, we're still at 80k + dead and growing every single day.

In England the first person to get the jab is an Elderly lady

In Wales it's care home workers

In Northern Ireland the person in charge of their roll out gets it first fair fucks to her

..Obviously not an easy answer as any plan will have its flaws but it does rather negate the 'keep schools open at all costs' mantra if kids still aren't getting taught the full curriculum.

As much as I'd love to live in a world where schools were just about education....In the real world, schools offer many kids a safehaven, somewhere warm, somewhere where they can get some food, somewhere they're not scared, somewhere where they receive some attention, some friendship & dare I say, even some love.....so I'd say it certainly does not negate any argument to keep schools open.

Covid: Did Boris Johnson order lockdown based on false data? | ITV News

Robert Peston has found that coronavirus data used to justify lockdown has now been downgraded. | ITV National News

It seems a non-story, however.

So.....5 weeks since schools went back after HT and infection rates still dropping in most parts of the country......with notable exceptions where high level of household & social mixing occuring.....

....some of us said its not all about the schools & they were right to keep them open!

Hopefully, as a belt & braces approach, they'll coordinate the inevitable 3rd national lockdown to roll into the February HT.

During that 5 week period we had 650 out of 1200 kids out for a minimum of 2 weeks.

Lockdown was really just doing what they experts had been saying all summer. If you want to open up schools something else has to close to offset it. So we kept schools open but closed bars, restaurants etc.

One for the teachers on here. With the huge numbers of students and staff off, and with some schools seeing who year groups sent home or even schools shut completely are kids actually getting their full education or is there going to need to be a lot of going back over things when we're back to normal?

GCSE’s are fucked for this year. You can make up the time with the other years but for Y11 and to a lesser extent Y13 (as they tend to be more independent and also less subjects) it’s too late. The measure already suggested by the DfE are a start but don’t go far enough.

I’m now planning for disruption up until Easter one way or another so am going to adapt what we teach between now and then to try and mitigate for it. Limited new content and a focus on consolidation. I’m probably lucky in Maths to be able to do so but some subjects won’t be as lucky.

So what we’re saying is: keep schools open, but don’t let kids go to them. Best of both worlds.

Haha, me, never !!!

We all know some of the data/modelling was flaky (I questioned the 4K deaths per day straight after that briefing - just wrong), I have to stick with what I said though, which was that I could understand/better accept a full lockdown if a vaccine was on the horizon (which it was/is).

Ps I still think localised restrictions are a better way forward, as is still reflected by the differing transmission rates all over the country, even after a national lockdown. The national lockdown even caused a spike in Birmingham as everyone went for a last hurrah just before ! (human nature after the first lockdown). Data also appears to show a two week circuit breaker (like in Wales) is probably inadequate as well. It’s a learning curve for everyone to be fair.

It is a non story as he seems to think the ons weekly testing is the only data driving policy. It's not

Not even got the foresight to close schools on the 11th, make the last week remote learning and self-isolation to take the kick out of the infection spread before it’s open house on the 23rd.....

Speaking of schools looks like no exams this school year in Scotland.

Higher exams to be cancelled for Scottish pupils

The country's education secretary says the decision was based on the disruption Covid has caused for many pupils.

Cue Coventry Telegraph squeezing absolutely anything out of this story just for any non headline that'll generate a click:

Hillary Clinton reacts to first coronavirus jab being administered in Coventry

The former US presidential candidate is just the latest famous figure from around the world to react to the news

Good.I know I veer dangerously close to the anti-vaccer loons but... I'll be ecstatic only when other countries start approving them, as well.

Giving it to the elderly first I see. So if side effects and many die theyll say due to old age ! Very suspicious personally as it has come too quick.

didn't realise until today the Chinese had given a million people a vaccine that had skipped key stages of the testing process.

Ha! Just had William Shakespeare, the William Shakespeare (the vaccine guy) suggested as a FB friend. Turns out he knows my parents.

My Mums happy because she’s always had to go “not THE William Shakespeare” when talking about him, but now he is THE William Shakespeare

Yup. Iknow it's hard but... I'd rather be thorough than first. There's no reason we can't be thorough *and* first but, given it's Boris Johnson in charge...! I just want that final final reassurance that some half-sane country feels like approving things, too!

Hard not to look at US number increases and not think the large numbers that ignored Thanksgiving COVID advice haven't played a role.
Has to be an eye opener no matter which country you are in for Christmas.
