Pompey still leading the race for Devante Cole and Ryan Colclough. May struggle to land them both though given the starting bids for Cole alone would be £650,000 according to reports. I can see the Chaplin deal seriously hotting up in the next few days now Pompey have expressed interest in these two, although, I can't see anything being sorted until transfer deadline day admittedly....just because it's us. But assuming the transfer fee has been agreed (again assuming reports are true) the deal should theoretically be sorted as soon as Pompey get the green light on these two, whenever that might be. As they'll still probably need the Chaplin money to land them.

Mucca Mad Boys I never said sign Collins instead of Mac whom I think was signed very early in May if I remember . I mean as well as Last season we nearly missed out on a place in the top six due to shortage of goals from our 2nd striker look at the table last season only Lincoln and ourselves failed to have at least 2 strikers in double figures .If Marc had stayed he would have been lucky to get half last years tally .That is my concern this season I think Ponti will be our main striker and second half of the season he will be tighter marked and Biamou and J C H are not go enough to fill the other spot only my opinion . As for Chaplin we should have moved on by now . Like I said what manager would let even their 2nd striker go now especially as any offer we make would not leave them much if any to spend on a replacement.

What are you basing that on?

The main issues we had was creating chances and scoring from positions.

The piece you highlighted, there must be a long list of player we have paid money for in the past few years but cannot see it at the moment. As for creating chances something I have not looked up and I may be wrong but in the second half of the season goals came when we adopted a more attacking approach not 2 defensive midfielders.

Yup. It doesn't preclude the free player being good, it doesn't stop a bad player being bought for lots if cash. But obviously the bigger the budget for a player you have, the more likely you end up with a better one.

Surely this is obvious?!? Where's the argument to be had?

I think Nick is referring more to our current situation. Generally applied to football, absolutely. However when you go to a level (ours for example) where the fees are pretty nominal, and plenty of the best signings and almost all of the business is done with frees, then I think that assumption goes out the window.

I don’t think I’ve been arsed about us spending money on a player vs. getting them on a free since we were in the championship.

Money still talks of course, but at this level your wage budget is everything, so if we signed a player on a free but were paying him top whack for that division then that would be a better signifier for me.
McNulty for example, signed on a free yeah, but Mansfield were the big spenders last season, and he very nearly joined them, but didn’t. So potentially we were paying him generously for L2. Based on that I think it’s hard to be too disappointed between signing a player for £300k or on a free, unless you know the whole context.

The budget was pushed to the limit signing 12 or so free agents, where was the money coming from for a £300k striker? If we signed Collins, it would’ve been unlikely we could’ve also signed McNulty and probably Andreu too.

The way you’re talking about not signing Collins is as if we live in a fantasy world where budgets don’t apply to us...

Which was the initial plan anyway - bring in Fox, Dann, Gunnarsson, Cranie and Westwood - develop them, then sell

Every team barring Man City, Chelsea and United operate this way

That may well be the case but if you want your team to be successful you don't sell your best players and then replace them with players that might one day come good.

Yes I know, be for anyone says it, the club has to " live within it's means "

Unless a Multi -Millionaire comes in and invest in the TEAM, it's the lower League's for CCFC.

Sometimes it's better to invest in quality than quantity as for McNulty we had already done the deal, J C H and Biamou or Collins those 2 players wages would have paid for Collins and his wage probably

We signed JCH after our FA Cup run got a bit more money into the coffers to make that deal. If rumours are to be believed, we structured the JCH deal so it’d come under this season’s FFP as opposed to last season’s. So no, Biamou’s wages wouldn’t have made up 300k for Collins. That’s a ridiculous claim. JCH and Biamou weren’t even signed in the same window. It’s beggars belief from your end to believe it is as simple as not signing Biamou or JCH to sign Collins.

There was no way we were going to sign McNulty and Collins in the same window, so a lot of your points are, frankly, irrelevant.

You mentioned ffp and I wonder if this is the obstacle regards signing Chaplin, we do seem to get one out then get one in now Stuart Beavon has gone maybe that allows another in. Beavon will have been on a decent contract too, one of the highest I would think.

I doubt FFP is a problem in the Chaplin deal as McNulty going will take care of the fee and wages
It's just a case of Portsmouth wanting a replacement before it's finalised

We won't have a problem this season with FFP. I know we won't be spending a penny of the extra Maddison money but it will still be counted as football fortune income. And 60% of the reported 3m (1.8m) will be added to what can be used.

But Robins has stated he would like three more in the door and I reckon they are linked, although Beavon was well down the pecking order first team wise wage wise he’d be pretty well a straight swop. I don’t know the rules of this ffp but it does seem one goes out then one comes in.

1 out 1 in is more to do with the wage bill. FFP would only come into it if you signed lots of players but couldn't get rid of any. Especially after our recent windfalls.

FFP is to do with how much you can spend on your squad. This includes both wages and transfer fees. At our level it is mainly 60% of income that can be spent on your squad. That is why season ticket sales are important. It gives an idea how much you have to spend to start with. Then you have what they call football fortune. This is cup runs, transfer fees received and TV money. Money not expected at the start of the season.
