Eoin Jess was a bad one. Signed for 2 mill at the age of 25 so should have been in his prime. Think he only scored one goal in 2 seasons and was then sold back to Aberdeen for 700k.

Kevin Drinkell is another, close to 1 million and was garbage.

He scored more than that but yeah I was thinking about him, him and Daish signed on the same day and we got less than 2 seasons from the pair of them. Think between them they cost £3m

Taking a risk here but big Mo was a bit of a disaster certainly at the start of his career here

Collier and Jones have to be the worst. They were signed for a combined fee of £725,000 and were dire. Collier played two games - I think on debut it was against Stoke and he was like Malaga - it was odd and he never played in England again. Jones scored a 25 yarder - I think also against Stoke - into his own net and played 11 games before going to Hong Kong

I thought we paid just over200,000 for Gary collier, are you saying we paid 500,000 for David Jones ?

I meant 6 not 7 collier was £350,000 I’m sure as he was I think the first player to have a fee decided by a tribunal - jones is reported at £275,000

Thought Mckenzie was ok. Eastwood and Kyle for sure. I have only supported us since our first year in the championship so haven’t really got an opinion on the PL years.

I seem to remember that we signed a player who had to go to tribunal and the figure the tribunal came up with was higher than what the team selling wanted. We avoided tribunals after that. May have been Peter Atherton?

I think we paid a tribunal fee of £650k for Gary Borrowdale

And at the risk of upsetting an old poster the reported £400,000 for Cody McDonald doesn’t look too smart. Another sizeable investment who left for free

Under Atkinson and Strachan we signed numerous centre backs and they were all generally poor bar Breen:

Shaw £1m
Williams £750k (albeit signed as a defensive midfielder)
Daish £1.5m
Evtushok £800k I think
Wallemne?
Konjic £2m

It's the biggest failing of that era, we had some good attacking players but on such a flaky base

I'm thinking Tim Sherwood but can't remember what we paid for him. Maybe free and high salary?
Seemed to be injured a lot.
And who was that one from Blackburn who had a serious motobike accident?

He was just on loan/ trial I think, I don’t think we paid anything for him. He scored against Leicester I think then totally disappeared.

He came out later and said that he'd just lost interest by then, he'd been in a serious motorbike accident and think he had PTSD or something. Shame as he was a good player earlier in his career.

yeah I wasn’t being disrespectful to him at all, I think he said that the accident took away all passion for the game, and he was afraid to even head the ball in case he aggravated his injuries.

Laurent Delorge, hyped up on arrival, delayed debut under Strachan, had a big Hiwula-style fall out with Strachan, didn’t play again until Nilsson took over, only scored 4 goals and didn’t do much else

Pressley has to be in for this. Someone will know the exact information but from memory/imagination he arrived, played 10 games during which he gave away 4 penalties and scored 2 own goals and then left again.

the biggest transfer disaster was probably not signing Hartson when we first had chance, probably cost us our premier league place.

Robert Jarni. Never saw him do anything decent in a Cov shirt when we signed him. At least we made a profit!

I didn't think Jones was that bad a player on the rare occasions he played, but unfortunately he was injury prone, and yes we certainly didn't get our money's worth from him. Around this same time we had tried to sign Kevin Beattie who was a great player but also injury prone, so we pulled out of the deal on medical grounds. Beattie was a different class to Collier and Jones, but nevertheless given we invested so much into signing the 2 of them its surprising that Milne didn't look to play them more often.

Before that we had also signed Bryan King from Millwall and Keith Osgood from Spurs, who also turned into disappointing signings. The emergence of Jim Blyth and later Les Sealey meant King's failure to shine didn't affect us too badly. Osgood seemed a decent enough player, and was someone we perhaps should have stuck with rather than signing Collier and Jones.

Yes he was disappointing, but I thought at the time we were premature to get rid of him so quickly. He was a young lad, getting used to being away from Scotland and who was going to get better with experience. His subsequent career in Scotland was a very good one too. We also made a profit on him in transfer fees, so doesn't really fit with the OP's criteria.

I agree that maybe we should have stuck with him - given him more time. But he was very disappointing whilst he was here. McFadz had a similar, albeit better, start and he's come good.
