Chaplin to me looks like an u23 player who should be in the development squad he’s pretty much on par with Ponti for me

Chaplin has a 1 in 3 goal scoring record with us. Ponti has a 1 in 7 at a lower level.

We didn't buy the finished article, we bought a 21 year old with potential and he definitely has that. I'm as frustrated as anyone about the chances he's been missing but at least he is consistently getting into the right positions.

It’s not even just missing chances which yes have been awful it’s his all round play first few weeks I rated him his over all game has been awful his so slow in everything he does really wanted the lad to do well but I just can’t see a player in there maybe with a target man tho that might change

Chaplin’s movement is decent, I think he can be decent a player, the issue I have is he misses too many chances, would a target man help, I’m not sure, some of his chances that he’s missed in his time here are through body position and possibly confidence.

But Chaplin plays 90 mins every game - Ponto has a few where he just about managed to get to the centre circle before blowing for full time. Plus Chaplin has had penaties.

I forgot penalties aren't real goals. 23% of Harry Kanes goals, have been penalties, someone better break the news to him...

I'm not saying they're not real goals, but you have to take into account it's likely to result in a player having a better scoring record than one who isn't given the penalty taking duties.

Pulling at very bare strings there.

We paid a fee, reported to be what I quoted, when you have a player come in for that fee you expect better than a player who requires four or five chances to score.

Some of the chances Chaplin has missed have been shambolic, the weekend against Blackpool as an example.

Is it a final fee including add on’s if they ever come to fruition or is it what we’ve actually paid for him?

Do you think that could be due to things like the system or where he is playing? Don't get me wrong he pisses me off most games but I don't think he was scouted to play in midfield.

I would imagine JCH was signed due to a clause in his loan contract based on us going, he is more suited to a mid to lower table league 2 team

I think we got lucky with Widdrington. Everyone he touched seemed to come off last season. Perhaps we are just comparing this new guy to him when the pickings have been slimmer?

Can’t deny that either way, Robins has been backed. Always got the impression that the signings were his, apart from poor Baka who took some flack from Robins very early on in his career an has never gotten past that

As I have said with Chaplin he is a young player having moved away from his family, has a burden of half a million price (alledgedly) hanging over him, it hasn't gone according to plan so far in terms of goals either by playing too deep or seeing balls flying over his head, he has McNulty to live up to the crowd are on his back he must think wtf has happened here, yes he is very frustrating but I think he must feel unless I score the team will probably lose, a lot of burden for such a young lad in his first full season, I slated him myself on Saturday because of the open goal miss but hopefully if someone starts scoring and he chips in with a few the tensions from his body will lessen and he will come good

Personally sad to see JCH go. He is a strong and decent footballer and has the playing attributes. Ok his goal scoring ratio isn't quite good enough ... yet.

It took Mark Hateley time to become prolific in front of goal. JCH very similar in some ways as clearly both were good footballers but struggling to score.

I expect JCH eventually will come good for someone providing he has his approach right.

At least 5 of the listed signings were signed or identified as targets before Badlan assumes the role of Head of Recruitment. Westbrook, Bosma and JCH were signed before Badlan cane in. Bakayoko and Chaplin were ‘identified as potential targets’ last year according to Robins when we signed them. Doyle was apparently very influential in signing Chaplin as he recommended him — Football Manager style!
