In the end Southampton have a better squad than us and should be up there challenging for the automatics

When they claim Frank Lampard is a shit Stephen Gerrard it’s controversial. The claim Will Still was a shit Igor Tudor is less so

When we have an incompetent referee , it magnifies itself , as those dirty Saints players , knew from early doors , what they could get away with …..

Do they have a better squad ?

They are 20 points behind us and we were the better team

Also we were the better team down there 11v11

That challenge was horrendous. Right in front me. Could have been a serious injury.
How many times have we complained about cr@p referees and this knob takes charge
Needs sorting big time

I don't necessarily agree they have th ebetter squad, but I don't think we were the better team, either.

They had the luck in the game, but you earn luck, and I don't think we did enough to earn ours. A draw would have been a better reflection on the play, but still, I didn't think our second half performance was great and I've no real complaints about the result.

I'm sure if you took an appropriate still shot of it, it wouldn't look particularly great.

You can't praise your own team
for smashing someone off the ball 4 seconds into a match, then cry about questionable tactics from another team...... although its par for the course for most football fans.

Everyone involved in football players, coaches, fans has double standards. Its ok when their team cheats.time waste foul.etc but when it's done to them they cry like a spoilt child who can't get their own way

I generally agree with alot of things you post .. but il leave you with this

We obviously had more possession and shots , More Big chances , Double the amount of touches in their box , higher expected goals , 2x as many shots on target and 5x as many crosses into the box

I felt like we were the better side their keeper was motm

Unfortunately, this is modern football. Teams come away from home with an aim to stop the opposition playing, sometimes even literally. As I'm sure everyone knows, this is not exclusive to Southampton, and us being top means most teams will come to the CBS with this mentality.

So, I don't blame Southampton, in a way. Who I do blame is the referee allowing it to happen. Being anal about the first two or three throw ins and then giving up until three minutes to go and then being anal again, persistent fouling with no threat of a yellow, persistent time wasting with no threat of a yellow, allowing players like Manning staying down until the physio moves on the Southampton bench, then jumping onto his feet like a miracle, and just overall lack of control of the game.

As always, I do not subscribe to the opinion of bias refereeing, but simply incompetence, and have to mention we did not lose because of the referee, but it was a shocking performance by the referee and a video montage should be made to highlight to other referees what happens when you fail to control a game.

It’s hard to believe but yes the stats back you up! I thought we only really started playing in the last 10 minutes and 2-3 of our big chances were then if I remember correctly? Thought Saints despite the usual tactics/timewasting etc deserved the win. The referees performance left a lot to be desired. This is a referee who the PGMOL have eyes on and has already made his debut in the Premier League.
Might be a familiar face next season if we make it.

True, but what I'm trying to get out is there is now a lack of subtly to so-called "game management" in modern football.

I always found things such as time wasting to be more of an art, but now it's just so blatant and referees sit by and allow it to happen.

I wont give away my exact age, but I will say I am slightly on the younger side and grew up during the "Premier League era", albeit my hairline is slightly older!

Don’t think there’s any possible way to complain about the other team cheating or the refs being corrupt without coming across as either incredibly lame or 12 years old.

They're only sending offs if there's VAR.
The sort of offence that is almost impossible to identify without a video replay.

I hated the tactics today and really don't like the dark arts.

But at least I am consistent. I hate it when we do it too.

Something needs to be done

But we gave two cheap goals away and missed very presentable chances. I don't think you can say we were the better team when that happens.

Second half, I thought they defended the box well for the most part, until it became panicked at the end.

Their player should be banned for the way he rolled around pretending to have a head injury. I really hope they miss out on promotion, they're a nasty bunch and their fans are bellends in general.

Middlesbrough and Leeds used to be masters of the dark arts and time wasting football

Its the pathetic weak spineless Referee’s that ruin games, today he was useless alongside his assistants. I for one look forward to seeing better quality games next season without a twat running it, Sam Alisson is the only one this season I can walk away thinking faultless

Weren’t Leeds famous for it in the 70s? I’m pretty sure Wimbledon were aswell.

it just comes off as sour grapes - got to agree with the poster earlier, they showed us respect. They targeted our weaknesses and exploited them. Much like Charlton with our friends up in teeside.

we know we’ll beat most teams in this league - Southampton came with a plan, executed it and we didnt have the answer. The only thing Lampard alludes to is slowing the game down which most teams will do when coming to a ground only 4 teams have won at in 18 months

When i saw the replay on the one on EMC, I let an audible wince.

Genuinely thought he'd broken his ankle.
