Could be a simple tactic of reducing the fee man City are seeking with the added bonus of Nobbling the oppo before Saturday?
My thought is much the same , I suspect this might be us saying to Man City that we are moving on elsewhere because you want too much for Doyle? Of course we don’t know but it’s surely not as daft as some of the bull shine ideas quoted on here at times😂

its good we’re being linked with quality players, just don’t see this one happening, for the older ones I don’t think we’re in a position to be shopping in Harrods’ unless Thats mve being sold ?

Anyone else think this reminds them of the Mowbray window where we started aiming for high quality Harrods signings and ended up signing Poundland reduced players by the end of the window?

Wonder if it is a play to get Man City to lower prices.

Don’t clubs normally negotiate before bids go in. At that point if they do truly value him at £20 million why would we waste our time

The point I'm making is we are aiming for Hughes, it seems unlikely and then when the dust settles we realise we do need cover at CB and sign someone whos not up to scratch.

Not sure that will happen under doug tbh , seems the type who would just not buy and wait until January

Yeah does feel like we’re aiming a bit high to me. You’d hope if this deal doesn’t come off we have a decent quality secondary target.

Its the sort of deal you aim to make at the start of July, giving you plenty of time if it falls through.

Why are our fans terrified of spending decent money on good players?
It’s just the allocation of funds that wouldn’t make sense to me. Let’s say this did come off for £8m, and MVE does go. Unless we do further business we’d have spent £12m this summer but the squad still looks a bit light at RB and on the wings. That’s understandable if we didn’t have the resources but if we do…

No because we had fuck all money to compete back then and somehow, even though we’d been asset stripping for years, Mowbray still believed SISU were interested in paying decent wages to out of contract players who were clearly waiting for better deals.

I get it but i genuinely think we're at the point where players who will immediately improve our first team will cost very good money. I'd also expect a couple of squad players more under the 'potential' bracket to come in for significantly less.

Thankfully, the squad is in a far better position than in the L1 years.

We've spent a lot of money on the squad over the last 2 seasons so Lampard will need to work with a lot of the existing squad. The starting 11 is clearly good enough for the Top 6 so we're in the privileged position where we don't need to force the issue in relation to recruitment. The clubs who sign several players early in the window tend to be ones in rebuild mode like the newly promoted/relegated teams as well as a few teams towards the bottom of the league who need to improve drastically.

We can talk about the need for 'cover' players for the likes of Thomas, Kitching and Sakamoto who are all good players, but players you'd be looking to recruit to improve upon. Cover is obviously important but every signing needs to be an improvement on what we have already.

This is the situation we’re in. To upgrade on any of our starting players is going to cost more than we’re used to spending on a single player.
