STEVE Waggott insists Mark Robins was the outstanding candidate from the club's 70 plus selection process.
Coventry City's development director outlined his qualities, revealing: “I think he came in with an overall package but definitely his attention to detail and his work ethic * his approach to performance improvement of individuals that collectively can be the constituent parts of a successful team.

“He loves the game. He eats, sleeps and breathes it and he said it isn't a profession, it's a vocation. So he will be bring a lot of great strengths and knowledge that we feel is important and the right ingredients to take this club forward at this juncture.“

He added: “All the candidates had a list of credentials of what we were looking for with this appointment.

“First of all it was having experience of managing at this level, which Mark has done, and we wanted someone to come in to take on a real challenge but also a real opportunity of managing Coventry City Football Club sitting near the bottom of the table.

“We were looking for a person with the style and standard to work with the first team but along with all youth development work that Mark has been doing over the last year with the Premier League, plus the whole community engagement programme of talent ID.

“We were looking for someone with knowledge of commercial aspects of the club and who understands the role that the first team, the playing squad and himself can do in supporting the commercial director and his team.

“Plus we also want to get this club back to playing a vital role in the community and a wider role in terms of the city itself to generate a feel-good factor by having a successful and competitive team.“

As for the delay in the announcement of the appointment, Waggott explained: “There was a slight delay in the contractual talks over the last two days but that was nothing sinister. Mark was contracted to the Premier League as a club support manager working with some very big clubs and managers and we didn't want to take him out under the wrong means. But we got to a position where the Premier League were comfortable and we could sign a contract.“

Even if Robins wasn't first choice he's got to say he was first choice hasn't he?

Didn't we have the same with Thorn and Adam LeFondre ... oops, sorry, my bad ..... I obviously meant Cody McDonald.

If this was an effort to refute the story that the job was offered to Ince, instead of employing the terns used, surely to state 'I categorically deny the job was offered to anyone other than Mark Robins' would have done?

Unless he wasn't able to speak thus, of course...

I think Robins was 1st choice, highly doubt Ince would get to the 'final hurdle' and walk away, and Robins hasn't technically failed at a club yet (we're prob about to ruin that!) Whereas Ince has either succeeded, or failed really bad!

Well there is an issue if you don't mind me being so pedantic. A story was run which clearly stated that Ince was offered the job but terns couldn't be agreed.

Waggott's statement appears to be designed to refute that; but when you read it through a few times, it clearly doesn't. So what's the point - unless it's designed to deceive?

Depends if you don't mind being taken for a mug or not. Personally, I don't
