CiTy DRAwiNG UP sHORTlisT As 55 APPly fOR CiTy jOB BUT wilDER is NOT ON iT
COVENTRY City are narrowing their search for a new manager and expect to start interviewing suitable candidates, including caretaker boss Richard Shaw, next week.

The club have received 55 serious applications in all, a number of “third party“ approaches from agents of managers currently employed and a dozen prank propositions from people who fancy a crack at the job after proving a whiz on the Championship Manager computer game.
The man heading the recruitment process, development director Steve Waggott, insists that City have not approached any other club with a view to talking to their manager but has not ruled out going for someone who is currently employed if that person is identified as an outstanding candidate.
But the Telegraph understands that Oxford United's Chris Wilder, the bookies' favourite, is not in the running to fill Andy Thorn's shoes at the Ricoh Arena.
“We have got a list of criteria for the type of manager and skill set we expect from the manager,“ said Waggott. “We have drawn that up and we are now going through this very long list to come up with a shortlist and to move on to the interview process as quickly as possible.
“Whoever comes up with the criteria, we will meet and have a discussion with them and it may mean we have a second round of interviews if there are more than one who are close to what we deem fit to take the club to the next level.
“We are very open minded about it all and we aim to start interviewing next week when there are no midweek games and we can concentrate our focus on this.“ As for caretaker boss Shaw's position, he said: “Richard's CV is in there and we have just got to look at the criteria and match it up. He's in the hat and he's said in all his interviews to date that he would be honoured and sees it as the next stepping stone in his career.
“But he also knows that the managerial job at Coventry is a big opportunity for others who have either been out of employment for a while or just come out of employment, or some who are currently in employment and looking for the next step in terms of their career pathway. So he knows it's going to be a really competitive field.
“I know Richard well I've known him for years both as a player and first-team coach at Millwall but the process has got to be followed so that everyone on the shortlist will be interviewed.“
Regarding managers currently in jobs, Waggott revealed: “What usually happens is we have third party representatives or agents who put a call in to say that this person would see Coventry as a step up from their current position but we have made no formal approaches at all and I can categorically state that to any clubs regarding a manager who is currently employed. It would be a register of intent but it's not an official application as such and if, as we went through the process, we thought there was a stand-out candidate at another club then we would make an approach to that club to say we are interested in their manager and go through the proper procedure.
“But that usually involves some sort of compensation clause subject to the contractual position of the manager.“
Asked if, given City's current financial situation, it would look to avoid going down that route, Waggott said: “It's a good question and the answer is that if it was deemed to be that the person who was the absolute stand-out candidate and it involved some sort of money but it couldn't be what I would call a huge or significant compensation because that's not where we're at and there would have to be careful consideration given to that it may be that a bit of a short-term hit in terms of finance could mean a long-term goal achieved by the club.
“You have to keep it on context. This season is a big one for us. We're trundling through cups and everything else but the league is what we are really focused on and we all know the figures which could mean an uplift of £4-5million on promotion in terms of income. So we would have to consider that if there was to be an approach to someone involving compensation.“
Asked about Oxford's Chris Wilder, Waggott admitted: “He's been mentioned by a lot of people but so have a lot of others. “As usual you get people around football who have an opinion on who would be the best manager and it was just a case of `have you thought about this manager'. Everyone knows he's done a good job but there has been no approach or any interaction between Coventry and Oxford United at all.“
He added: “This is a big opportunity and whoever is going to take it on has got to know that we have an infrastructure in terms of squad and backroom in place here. “They definitely need to know what it takes to gain promotion and galvanise a team to get a winning mentality and someone who has got knowledge of the lower leagues but could also, looking ahead, handle bringing together a Championship squad from the basis of this squad.“

He's just reading between the lines that there has been no approach or interaction between CCFC and Oxford United.

Think the league rules are that a club has to make an official approach to a club whose manager is under contract.

He's bluffing, there's a reason he's odds on.

Steve Cotterill was favourite when Hoofroyd got the job.

Redknapp was favourite for the England job.

Mourinho was 40/1 to be cov manager when he was unemployed, the guy probably doesn't know we exist!!!

The bookies, when it come to manager prices, are not a reliable source to go off!

I don't think that the quote actually states that Wilder is not on the short list. It just says that there has been no approach or interaction between CCFC and Oxford Utd. I'd be very surprised if Wilder's agent hadn't placed one of those unofficial "he might be interested" phone calls.

Yeah they were favourites, rough estimates from the bookies, but Wilder was 1/6 on at one point, they know something we don't.

They said on Tuesday that it would probably be next week before a decision was made.

Don't care how long it takes as long as they make the right choice. Be stupid to rush. This decision could define our season and long term future.

Misleading headline. Wilder hasn't been approached, same as any other manager currently employed. This does not mean he isn't on the shortlist at all.

Part of me is thinking we are going to go through all this and they will just somehow excuse that Shaw is the right man for the job...

No they don't. I have said this about 10 times already so far but these markets are so volatile due to the small amount of money that is traded on them compared to normal football markets. It only takes a few people chucking a bit of money on someone for the odds to dramatically fall. Then others will see the price come in and think ooh something must be happening there, I'll get on quick.

It's punters driving the odds down, not the bookies.

Need to get the right man in, so i'd rather the board take their time. Not too long, just enough to make a good choice that will make a difference. Not sure about any of the names being mentioned at the moment. Let's hope they don't mess it up.

Appreciate that but the board (if they were doing their job right) should have already had a pretty good idea on a short list for replacement Managers while Thorn was still there - obviously he was always going to be under pressure after last year from the off - a fact proven by his firing after just a few games

So I would have expected the board to already know their short list weeks ago based on who is available and their records - we cannot afford to let this roll on for weeks as we have to get the new man in and working with the players NOW - change HAS to happen quickly or we will not be in contention for any kind of promotion. If that happens we can look forward to more player selling next summer to balance the books and a worse squad next year

Anyone else thinking that they're waiting until City win a couple of game so they can then justify giving it to Shaw?

;)

Maybe it was Shaw all along but the board know they'll be uproar if Shaw gets it while we lose and continue to not play well.

If SISU want to make money, which they do, they want promotion. Thorn they knew would pick good players for the league, but we need a proven manager to get the best from the team get promotion and stay in the championship while they build back to the prem. A little bit of compo compared to the money they would make is OK,
They may have an idea of who they want but if someone they thought wouldn't want the job has appiled then great, but would have to wait for thorn to go before they could start looking for a replacement, not before

You make some good points. The board should've had several managers in mind for some time, but this is no ordinary organisation we're talking about is it? The whole set up is a sham. If anybody can balls it up, those lot can.

At least half the players purchased look suspect. The squad looks a long way adrift of mounting a serious promotion challenge. Some of the signings just look plain odd.

I think that's exactly what they were hoping for. A win on Saturday could seal the deal! ;)

If we are not seeing the best, some I agree look odd but Thorn is a good scout and if he saw the potential then I trust they could do well. SISU could be hoping for play-offs for the extra cash:whistle:

Just like when he signed Fox, Dann, Dublin & Houchen?

I reckon that Richard Shaw will be given the job.

Also, 55 people have applied for the job, it makes a mockery of those who whined...'but who would want the job!?!?!?'

i for one am happy with the way it is going. 55 serious applications, good, taking there time to get someone who can not just get us promoted but work in the championship - again good. Not bothered how long it takes, it is only september, get the right man, get the team performing and lets get promoted. Shaw and carsley will be okay as support and i am sure in few years may make a decent manager, but not for ccfc just now. too much speculation at the moment, be interested to see who is actually interviewed.

Not really, who out of those confirmed as interested inspires you then? Anyway an initial application is a long way from actually signing a contract. Could get down to contract negotiations and there wages are too high, could get to the interviews and decide the expectations are too high with the resources or could demand his own backroom staff etc.

If Richard Shaw is given the job as you think it will make a mockery of the previous sacking
