Anybody know anything about this? BA cancelled my flight home today, literally just sent a text last night saying it was cancelled.

They rebooked me on a flight later this week as everything else is full but I need to be back at work tomorrow.

Had to book with another airline so I’m £600 down but from what I’m reading compensation is capped at a couple of hundred quid. Surely they have to reimburse costs as well?

Anyone had to deal with anything similar?

Claim compensation if your flight's delayed or cancelled

When you’re due help or compensation for a delayed or cancelled flight, how much you’ll get and how to claim

Cheers, it seems to be that if they offer you another flight, no matter when it is, they’re covered for everything but the £200 compensation

Pretty annoying but is it a surprise that the systems loaded in their favour

Yeah, that’s my next thing to check when I get home

Logically you’d think if you’ve had to pay out an extra £600 to get home you should be able to get it back somehow

I thought it was the case that they had to get you home on the next available flight ... not necessarily THEIR next available flight!
So they should book you on Norwegian Air, SAS, easyjet or whatever to get you home asap.

Seems to be a few things they should do but don’t actually bother

When they wanted to move me to a BA flight later in the week they didn’t even offer to sort accommodation

Looks like they make people arrange things themselves then make the system for compensation pretty complicated

Seeing lots of stuff about open and shut cases for compensation where people have ended up having to take legal action to get a penny back

If you make a claim against your insurance and it is rejected and you disagree, raise a complaint and ensure you receive a "final response letter", which is usually issued within eight weeks of the complaint being raised. Keep a record of all written communication between you and the business, including the acknowledgement of the complaint being received, as well as the airliner.

If you disagree with the outcome, or you have not received a response within eight weeks of the complaint being raised, you can bring your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service free of charge. An investigator will look into your case, and will offer a "view", if you or the business disagree with the view, it can be referred to an Ombudsman for a decision. A decision, if agreed to by the consumer, is legally binding on the business.

The FOS is not a particularly quick service, but it's free, fair and impartial. To note, do not be surprised if your complaint is raised against a different business to who you have been dealing with, as they maybe the "broker", the complaint will be raised against the business that wrote the policy, known as the "underwriter". Apologies if teaching to suck eggs, but worked in banking for many years and the FOS previously, so have a bit of knowledge of financial products.

European Regulation 261/2004 was brought into UK law as per the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018, so still in statue. Although, it can now be amended, so not sure on the particulars as it stands to this day.

That’s useful, will have to do some digging when I’m back.

Just kind of seems common sense that if they say they can’t get you home on the day you’ve booked and paid for then they should have to cover the cost of someone else doing it but things are never that straightforward

BA have given me £9 I've got a claim in for the standard compensation which is £200 but it looks like getting expenses back is a nightmare.

From what I've been reading BA just ignore everything until you get a lawyer involved. Of course in the vast majority of cases paying a lawyer is going to cost more than the amount you will ever get back so it's clearly a deliberate policy.

Also found out that BA has one of the highest rates of flight cancellations. Definitely put me off using them again. Previously if BA was a few quid more I'd pay it thinking there was less chance of something going wrong or that if it did there would be better customer service than someone like easyJet or Ryan Air but clearly not.

The compensation is £210 up to a certain distance and increases if the flight is further.
my lads had 2 lots of £210 from ryanair of all people for delayed flights that cost less than £40 each recently.
Just checked and its around 1480km for the cut off for higher payouts

BA is dreadful; I’d much rather fly with Ryanair or EasyJet. A few years ago a flight of mine got cancelled and I got the €250 compensation (or whatever it was) and EJ refunded my hotel room plus food with no questions asked whatsover.

yep, it seems like you get that automatically, albeit slowly. but you're also entitled to reasonable out of pocket expenses and it seems BA do everything they can to avoid paying that, essentially by not responding to you.

if you search BA on twitter its just full of people with open claims that can't get a response from anyone.
