Looking at the defence last season, something needs to change. Aside from the fact that we conceded the most goals in the top half… tactically, if we’re trying to be more ball dominant and playing a high line, we probably need a CB with a profile of being athletic and more comfortable in possession.

Grimes slots in as a 3rd CB in possession to give the CBs (Thomas in particular) an easy passing lane so they don’t give the ball away in compromising positions (like MVE).

My gut instinct is that one of the CBs (Lati or Binks) will be moved on this summer.

He was a cheap young pickup that provides cover and might develop. Far from the oddest signing we’ve made

Yeah, I mean there’s no doubt who the better player is, and I’m sure Robins/Austin knew that. But you can see the rationale in betting on a permanent signing rather than doing another one year loan.

I'd prefer Mcnally and Heggem both better than what we have and would cost literally combined the same as Doyle.

No doubt Doyle would be a great signing, but I think we need to offload both Binks and Lati, Doyle costing 8 million would be a huge chunk of our budget for just 1 player replaced.

Lati and Binks weren't good enough in the 23/24 season, we all said we lacked the leadership and experience from losing McFadzean and instead of signing someone in that mould we signed Binks despite him already being second choice.

There has to be question marks over Doyle , as he will never play for Man City , but they keep farming him out to championship clubs .
His lack of genuine pace is his big Achilles heel .

Yes I agree and I'd move on Lati. Problem is do you think it's realistic Kitching and Doyle fighting for the shirt? I could see whoever isn't In the side wanting out. I hear what you are saying but I'd think Kitching now expects to be first choice.

One of the few ex-players I wouldn't mind signing, at the time I kept telling people he would play for England someday. Progress seems to have stalled somewhat, but think a settled few years would have him flying.

I think Lati will be the one we see move on. A good versatile player, but if we are playing that high line then you're right about the type of profile that we need.
Lati makes me so nervous when he's in a tight spot, almost every game you can guarantee he's going to try that move where he plays for a foul.

If Lati is happy being a versatile squad player, I'd keep him. I think he is a valuable player to have and has a good attitude.

Tough one isn't it, it's whether or not he's happy to be sat on the bench.
If we want to make the step up, we need to improve at the back, which could mean possibly Kitching or Thomas even dropping to the bench, he'd be right down the pecking order, especially if we bring in a new RB cover.

He is also a USA international and the USA are hosting the World Cup next summer. These factors create premiums and for the Saudi league he would be solid signing for an aspiring affluent club.

The striker problems would be able to be fixed if we sold the current ones. They would generate enough income to spend on decent replacements

That is a lot of games, he'll end up burning out in his late 20s.

For him, if he wants premier league football, he probably needs to move abroad for a season or two, and play top flight football like Maatsen and Van Arnolt did.

He's a good player but I do wonder if his lack of pace would be an issue with us playing such a high line.

I'd never spend £8m for a CB in the Championship.

He's quality but if you do the right scouting you can get 4/5 top players for that.
