A customer of mine has recently been burgled, took her car, money, valuables, laptop, phone, wiped her out. I've been burgled in the past so know how she feels, and when I was a kid our house got done and never caught the thieves. I reckon it's on the increase as I see the aftermath of this on my round, and hear more of this going on than ever before. An elderly lady I know got burgled and she left her home she'd lived in for 50 years because it upset her that much, so its more than just losing stuff. A disgusting crime !

Scum of the earth. Should waive their human rights the minute they go inside somebody else's house.

I remember an elderly lady who had a painter in to do some painting on her house, he had a young lad with him. Anyway the young lad got caught breaking in her house, but not before knocking her over to escape, she was in her 90's !

hearing more and more instances of houses getting done over by robbers entering through unlocked doors and windows.
Same with cars as I found out to my cost recently when I never locked it and my satnav got nicked.
Worth double checking all your doors and windows before going out/to bed and hammering the message home to your kids if they're anything like mine for leaving them open.

I left my front window open the other night, nothing happened though thankfully but always feel a bit safer with dogs.

I get OCD about checking all the doors and windows, it's mainly to stop the dog from escaping rather than anybody getting in.

Making sure windows are shut because of people getting in are common sense, it shouldn't be and people should be able to just leave them open all night but sadly can't in this day and age.

Have heard more about it during the heatwave as people have been too trusting and just go out thinking it will be OK not knowing which little rats will be in to take all of their stuff.

I leave our lounge window open all night, every night when it's warm.

We do have blinds though and it is only a horizontal top window.

We got burgled in the 60's on Woodway Lane, peaceful area and no crime hardly went on. So even though it was a shock back then, it showed there were thieves about. But it is a daily thing now everywhere, no matter if you're in a city or rural. But people don't help themselves as windows are left open, the woman I've mentioned went out leaving a window wide open, and paid the price, letting a scumbag in. I told a friend of mine to stop giving out too much info on her Facebook, she gave out days and times when she was going out, even saying she was off on holiday etc. Obviously nothing wrong in that, but we don't live in a lovely world do we, so she cut down on giving out private stuff.
We have to be on the ball constantly. A chap was trying my neighbours door handle the other day, I said to him what you after mate ? He calmly replied that he had got the wrong house and walked off. You have to be alert 24 hours a day like a human CCTV !

Disgusting crime to break into someone's house. The fear lasts well after the criminal has gone in what should be a safe space.

However, let's not do the pearl clutching, burglary is at an all time low: Overview of burglary and other household theft - Office for National Statistics

What's increased is your ability to know about it thanks to 24/7 media and things like Facebook.

As they used to say on Crime watch: Dont have nightmares.

Why does the polce station need a tracker? Do they lose it a lot?

remember years ago playing at Hillsborough, (may have been the cup quarter final), where they threw hundreds of them into our end. I'd be lying if I said i didn't indulge.

Well the police recorded stats are widely regarded as a joke and can be ignored.

The Crime Survey is regarded as the only viable way of tracking stats and even that is a perception survey and excludes a lot of Groups from it (e.g. businesses, care homes etc.) - also crimes can be substitutional - so crimes such as burglary may be declining but those not tracked by the survey such as internet fraud could be significantly increasing.

General view is the trend downwards is probably correct but widely exaggerated.

Oh, yeah, I remember that. Famous old story. They took them out of the wrappers, all shoved them up their arses, put them back in the wrappers again and then threw them into our end.

Luckily I had brought a packed lunch.

I've had 2 break ins in the last 10 months. I'm not bothered about what was stolen, it can be replaced. It's the feeling that someone has been in and gone through all your stuff.

First time the police were excellence, they sent forensics within an hour, then I had a follow to do a statement about 3 hours after that. Second time they didn't even bother sending anyone round. The Insurance (Direct Line) have been brilliant both times, but I'm sure I'll get hammered in my renewals. I'm seriously considering having CCTV installed.

A family moved in down the road about 15 months ago, never had a problem at all before, police are on the street at least twice a week now, everyone seems to be getting broken into, none of the family work so they know when everyone else is coming and going, I'm not saying it's them but it's definitely them (I'd put my house on it).

Another burglary on my round last night, just took the owners car keys and sped off with their car.
They said it was dealt with over the phone, no police came out.

Yeah most of it is over the phone nowadays.

My wife's car got smashed into for them to take stuff out of it and didn't see a single officer. Kept getting random phonecalls from a callcentre who had no interest in really listening to things.

They just gave a crime number and it was basically just crack on with it.

We found some of the stuff as it had been thrown, they had no interest in having a look at it for fingerprints. We had CCTV but they said they could only use it if it physically shows them smashing into the car to get the stuff (not them walking out with any of it or being near it at the time)

Understand the police are busy and everything but it doesn't really help.

unfortunately......as to reinforce the stereotype.....in Liverpool.

All three happened around 6.00pm in broad daylight.

2 cases appeared to be all about robbing the motors off the drive.
1 case was race targeted according to the old bill. My mate is Indian & apparently a gang has been targeting indian & chinese family homes in the belief they're full of gold & jewellery.......

Sums up the problem there. Been loads of burglaries and car thefts round by me but you never see the police. Members of the public have even caught people red handed on two occasions, restrained them and called the police for someone to come out and arrest them to be told nobody was available.

I've twice been broken into through top windows you wouldn't think a cat could climb through. Interrupted the burglar on the second occasion, a kid of about fourteen. Rather than run off when he saw me he looked as if he was going to take me on, till he saw the heavy object I was holding in my hand.

Well it happens in the country as well we got done while we were away and actually now we have nothing really left of value but we now have an alarm and its deafening inside - not sure what its protecting anymore as tellies are 10 a penny i dont have laptop and our cars are bangers now ! the law reckoned is was stuff to sell for drugs - no idea how long they were in there i would'nt let my wife see - i cleared up and sent her to stay with a neighbour forensics waste of time

Why would a higher percentage of crimes go unreported than before? Should be pretty constant surely?

A large % would be reported you’d imagine for a crime ref for insurance purposes.
The % followed up by police will be decreasing all the time.

I think because of the types of house entry I'm on about, ( through open doors and windows). People know the insurance won't pay out so aren't reporting them if they haven't lost too much.
I know someone who it happened to recently and when they were cancelling their bank cards they told them they'd lost their bag because it was easier.

Of course, it may not be higher. I have no evidence it is.
