PurpleBin- as much as I have Sky Blue tinted glasses I would never make such a statement. Sunderland are a much much bigger club than us. So are many others in the championship and Ipswich and Portsmouth in our league.
Nothing to be ashamed of.

With the exception of Sheffield, places like Sunderland, Ipswich and Portsmouth are smaller than Coventry in population but are possibly places with a stronger football heritage and definitely in the case of Sunderland and Ipswich, far larger geographical reach. The other consideration is fanbase dilution. In Coventry, there are also two rugby union teams and an ice hockey team that share the same diary when it comes to support. Within an hour’s drive of Cov, there is loads to do. Living in Sunderland, what is there unless you follow football? Can we gerr to the beach again, ma? Can we? Can I get a kern of chips? It literally is like stepping back in time.

err go to Newcastle a few miles up the road? Sunderland is not the land that time forgot. It is a city in its own right and you may not like it but it has a fan base we can only dream about.

Unless they have moved there from Newcastle (i.e. parents / family supported), that really is not an option, in terms of supporting another team

I can’t see many Sunderland fans choosing to go to a Newcastle on matchday, but thanks for social and economic lecture about population and fanbase sizes, Riyadh.

Decent yes but not one of the monsters of the game which is a widely held opinion.

I think Derby have brilliant support- not a big place but what I’d call a proper football town, it’s in their genes. More loyal than Forest for sure. Never 50k plus or anything but always good gates.

Forest got bigger crowds than them last season even though Derby were chasing promotion and Forest were bang average.
Yes, Nottingham is a bigger city but it also supports another team.

It’s a combination of things- Sunderland are a bad club living in the 1930s with good support. Forest are a club with much more recent success but would never pull in Sunderland’s crowds- does that make them bigger? I dunno, probably not though. We’re easily as big as teams like Brum, WBA (rarely sold out in the Prem), Brighton, Palace, Southampton (actual crowds 5k+ lower than reported) etc- there’s a CCFC shaped gap in the top league at some stage without us looking out of place.

No doubt in my mind which club is bigger.
Forest is bigger because they imo have a more nationwide following of fans.

In my 50 years as football fan living in London. I don't think I've ever met a sunderland fan in this area. Met and know dozens of forest fans.

Sunderland fan base is a very loyal local fan base.

Forests is by far more nationwide imo a bit like Leeds.

My opinion is that football clubs that carry the name of their county as well as the town or city they represent seem to have a stronger bond with the surrounding communities. Notts, Derby, Leicester for e.g. - I work around Leicestershire a lot and people from Loughborough, Ashby and Coalville still consider themselves ‘Leicester’ people by virtue of county connection.

The football club is the life of a lot more people there. CCFC is only the life of about 10,000 in Coventry.

Maybe that is partly down to less to do or a more deprived area? Who knows.

Ipswich and Portsmouth- are you nuts?

Check a couple of tabs ago and you’ll see everyone saying “we will never sell 10,000”- you really don’t know what you’re talking about.

No- it’s you that are wrong with your prophecies of how small we are, while not really grasping what it means or the reasons a club has support. You’re massively off the pace with your strange summaries.

You simply can’t compare a team that’s performed poorly for decades with one on the up.

Forest don’t carry the name of their county. County do

(only playing my grandad lived in Notts and was a Forest fan, the 70s produced a wide ranging loyal fan base)

We will see a bigger picture when the unsold season tickets are released. Is that 12:00? Obviously pretty much every season ticket holder will be there for this one, but some will have bought elsewhere, either for a change or to sit with mates.

500?

So far we have sold over 9,000 home tickets and Birmingham have sold just under 9,000 away tickets. Hopefully the crowd should be over 20,000. It’s set to be a great day! -

Is it just me who now thinks this won't sell out? Not that it matters too much, but we have sold just over 9,000 according to Cov Twitter. I can't see us (although I really hope I am wrong) pushing another 6,000 or so in the next 5 days.

Well yes, but even if it's not 15k, there are 7 blocks still to sell plus any that havent been picked up by ST holders which I imagine will be more than some people think. All I go with and most I know have bought elsewhere.

Yeah we’re the same. They’ll definitely be a load more seats available tonight. We won’t sell out but at least we won’t be outnumbered.

Anyway, let’s count the dots for Fleetwood and Bristol Rovers as they are a lot more important. The euphoria around this game is puzzling

The whole of Tilton around to Main Kop, is about 17k i read somewhere.

Doesnt look like we will sell out.

9k sold and were behind the goal, means at least 1/2 k season ticket holders not bought?

I think the ticket limit is a lot less than you’re thinking. No reason to think all seven blocks will be available is what I’m saying.

Nah. We are doing far better than any previous season in L1 and playing far more attractive football. They were 12k last season, youve have seen an increase this. Maybe 13-14k, probably not 16

I still know people who are boycotting because of Sisu. Wouldn't matter to them if we were back at the Ricoh. I think the fact is of Sisu left and we were in Coventry attendances would increase significantly - probably towards that 16k, maybe slightly beyond. I don't agree with their stance but it is the reality.

I do wonder what iFollow is doing to the attendances. Lot easier to “boycott” if you can watch in your pants with a can at home.
