They're on wheels and then lifted in. I do get it, binmen in the 80s were always off with bad backs as they had to lift them (from the garden not the end of the drive) and then tip them in. Thankfully we have machinery to do it, but walking and wheeling is the not the same as lifting and carrying.
Tell you what away from the nonsense talk , the best thing I could do is when I do a Leamington route on Tuesday have you come and shift the bins that I do , far bigger than domestic bins .. and then ask you how light you think they are mate ..

Totally, yes. But then I get pissed here when someone starts on silly money and I've been here 20+ years. It happens everywhere. The test is are you happy with what you get paid for what you do regardless of others? If you're not move. I know I say it like it's easy, but in the private sector that's our only choice and don't see why it should be different. I've seen loads come and go here who earn more than me for doing far less, but many have gone and I've stayed employed and thankful to be so. I've never asked for a pay rise, it's always been rewarded for doing a good job or an annual basis across the board.At the very least Rob, you can surely agree that starting several drivers on 4.5 k more a year than somebody who has been there a year is a bit naff and shouldn't happen

You hate the unions because you've had all of the benefits of them, shorter working week, paid holidays, basic employment rights, safe working environment etc etc , without ever having to fight yourself for them.

He got fed up at the Jag of always being on strike in the 70's (in the days when you didnt get paid to strike). Always out and often didnt know what for with a young family and mouths to feed or on a two/three day week and no sign of it ending with no real choice but to follow suit. Ended up leaving and became a milkman. Since then unions have never really been my thing.
Shouldnt they have just found a new job instead

"equal pay" was a disastrous union win many years ago, a proper leveling down exercise so I don't think unions are so naive to go for it nowThis is the bit I don’t get as the pay should be equal as the roles are competency based and not experience based and that is where I would have thought any union or individual should challenge a pay differential on years service.
If the role is to drive, or on the streets emptying the bins then each role in its two listed should have equal pay for each role across every individual. Drivers all one rate, refuse collectors all one rate unless supervisory responsibilities or added duties
Everyone needs a pay rise to keep up with this shit. Hope the drivers get what they want.
