Following on from the goalie thread:

Best individual performance I saw was Shearer against us in one of his early games for Blackburn. Peak Shearer before he was injured and lost pace. A masterclass in centre forward play - he was unstoppable. Movement and technical skills on another planet.

Best team performance, Liverpool against us in 1989-90 shortly after they won the title. They won 6-1 and we were left chasing shadows. It was hard not to admire the quality of that Liverpool team. Barnes was unplayable and not the only one. Not helped by Gould throwing a couple of youngsters into the side for 'experience.' Not sure that Howard Clark for one ever recovered from that particular experience.

Special mention also to a young Gazza shortly after he broke into the Newcastle team. Obvious to anyone there that he was going to be a very big player. Finally Waddle terrorising Downsy the year before the Cup Final was another performance I will never forget - Downsy fortunately had the final laugh on that one though!

In terms of an “away” performance , Crewe at the Ricoh in the jpt semi? We absolutely battered them for 89 minutes and they had one counter attack and scored. Was left utterly bamboozled how we lost that....

It was worse they had 3 counter attacks and scored 3

Seem to remember a very young Gareth Bale running the show from LB against us for Southampton.

Might have been the first few years at the Ricoh and not HR though. Memory fails me.

If it weren’t the goalkeeper (Phillips?) it was the post - most frustrating game ever - was more one sided than the Tranmere game a few weeks back and we lost 3-0

Hate to say it but we were taken apart by a good Villa side too on more than one occasion. Unpayable at times in the era with Yorke up top for them

A young Nigel Clough’s ten minute hat trick was pretty impressive, after we were 4-0 up. Although we did go on to win the game 5-4

That was the wierdest game I've seen IMO. I thought overall we played excellently that day and absolutely battered them (as we did in the second leg - was that the Eakin Dan! Dan! game?) and to lose at all would've been galling. To lose 3-0 was just inexplicable. I left that game shell-shocked and didn't speak the whole way home trying to understand and come to terms with the result..

Leicester thrashed us 8-1 at Highfield Road in a League Cup game in 1964.
This was against a very talented Coventry side featuring three internationals.
Leicester had 7 Scottish players in their team.
George Hudson scored our lone goal (past Gordon Banks).
This was the most emphatic demolition of CCFC I ever saw.

I remember West Ham going 3-0 up against us by half time, as I recall Paulo di Canio was unplayable and was the only thing worth watching second half, think there was a little Paulo Di Canio chant going in the West terrace

Can think of a few great performances. The best goal I saw scored against us there was probably Davor Šuker when we won 3-2.

A few already mentioned - Shilton for Forest in 1978 was best goalkeeping display I ever saw against us.
Barnes in the 6-1 defeat by Liverpool, when we actually had a half decent team and took the lead through Gallacher - Ronny Rosenthal was also unplayable that day.
Shearer after he had first joined Blackburn and before his injuries - not only was he powerful but also very quick at that point.
A couple though that weren't as famous that I remember are John Chiedozie for Notts County, who stuffed us 5-1, but also had 4 goals disallowed that all looked legitimate, and also John Salako when he played for Palace in a 4-1 win (never played as well for us!).

Remember that also. I think we won 4-0 or 4-1 because the rest of their team were awful. along the same lines, I remember Ginola absolutely bossing a game for Spurs, maybe 98. Think we won again 4-1 or similar.
Another notable mention to Kanu who I remember being unplayable in a game against Arsenal. That would’ve been 97-98 as well.

I meant for Crewe, their goalkeeper was phenomenal - but yeah. Our game went pear shaped as soon as Murphy went off injured.

after that game I had an irrational hatred of Crewe. I was born in 88 so to be so convinced we were going to Wembley that year and have it snatched away like that (especially after the Preston game) messed with me badly.

I’m hindsight knowing it was 2 legged, we maybe should have cut our losses and played out for the 1-0 defeat.

Kevin Campbell when he scored that hattrick for forest. Alen Boksic for Boro when we got relegated and Thommo got sent off. Cantona, can't quite remember the game. Think Andy Cole scored 3 seconds after we took a corner. Cantona is the best player I've ever seen to this day.

One of the best performances by an opponent that I have seen was a game against Bolton in the late seventies. They had Frank Worthington as their centre forward and that day he gave a master class of a performance. I think the final score was 2-2 and we were by far the better team. However Worthington, who was up against Jim Hagan at Centre half that day and who gave him a torrid time, dragged his team mates with him to gain a result that without him they just would not have achieved. Worthington, like a lot of seventies players, was a larger than life character who was very skilful but who also liked a good time away from football. That day he was immense and gave a performance that I have never forgotten from a fairly innocuous game. If he could have played consistently at that level he would have got a lot more England caps than he did.

That doesn't need hindsight - it was obvious to everyone in the stadium except the team and manager! It really didn't seem like they knew it was a two-leg tie. At 0-1 we threw caution to the wind when it was totally unnecessary. Ridiculous.
