Hence why I asked what they cost - was it around £2.5 million?

Yeh possibly, doesn't seem to be an issue with any of the other players though. Far more important players, like Rudoni, seem to have a very good relationship with Frank, which has helped take him to another level. Therefore, i'll back the manager on this one.

As I pointed out lampard has a history of both freezing out players and falling out with players .

Bassette may have been a bad egg I dont know , I guess time will tell .. but his treatment of doucoure at Everton who was a good player suggests that he can spit out the dummy even if its at a detriment to the team

I don't really care what he did at Everton tbf. Here he's fallen out with our 4th choice CF (we're guessing at that, he might just not think he's any good) while the values of players like Rudoni and Torp have trebled and probably more tbh. I'm sure the owner would be pretty pleased overall.

I'm sure his option price is at least what we paid. If Utrecht don't want him they will just send him back, if they do want him it will be because he is worth more than the option to buy price. If they want him but don't think he is worth the price they can always renegotiate knowing that if we say no, they just send him back.

Then you also need to blame the people paid by the club handsomely to develop the footballers we buy .

You also have no idea what the buy amount is at the end of the loan

Or I can blame the scouts who were convinced we were buying primo talent that turned out to be a development project at best?

I’m not going to get too annoyed at the two different coaching staffs for not turning him into a Championship striker if we’ve actually been sold a pup.

Because it’s quicker to ask someone who clearly has an in-depth knowledge of Sunderland’s squad

They range from £1m to £3m so yes.

I don’t want to turn this into a “He’s 28 until he’s 29” debate but £1 million is not “in and around” £2.5 million imo…

Sunderland are clearly operating under different parameters from us (and most other Champ teams) financially. If you want to insist that Championship squads are full of young players signed for seven-figure fees but with no expectation of them being first team contributors then that’s fine - I’m not sure it’s true though.

Pretty sure robins at the time suggested he was a player with great potential , which suggests a development project

I don't want to inject myself into a separate argument but i'm pretty sure you can be a 'development player' while also playing reasonable minutes in the first team. For the fee i'd imagine that would have been the expectation.

Which is fine, except a) £2.5 million is high for a Championship development project and b) his current ‘development’ trajectory has him back where we found him after one year, with a deal already in place to sell

Maybe you think that’s a good use of the cash - I don’t!

I imagine the idea was to slowly bring the lad through give him more and more game time .. Not sure if when lampard arrived we had injuries but he was thrown in and tbh might have been a bit too soon .

Again , I dont even think ability is the issue here , as you say weve a pretty good record with players weve spent decent money on .. its got to be down to his relationship with Frank , possibly down to his own attitude or application .

feels like Weve definitely not done enough with this lad imo

But if its an attitude or application issue its only going to end one way isn't it? As i've said we have plenty of other players who have bought into whats going on and have shown obvious improvement from doing so. This feels like more of a Norm problem tbh.

I agree. I don't think he's a bad player either, i thought he showed glimpses, but if he's got the wrong attitude he won't be getting anywhere.

OK Hjelde was £2m, Bellingham was £2m, Mundle was £2m, Seelt was £2m, Akelsic was £3.5m, Abdullai who they signed last year was £1.5m

If you argue against that you are just splitting hairs. Lots of teams do this development thing we tried to do. Just admit youre wrong,

And they were signed with no expectation of contributing to the first team? If so, then yeah, fair play to you.

oh my goodness do give over.

Seelt had a knee injury till christmas and didn't play for the second half of the season.

He's since played 2 games in the prem.

Your argument is pathetic

Bassette played in 25 games last year didn't he? Hardly no contributing to the first team.

He's been proven wrong and is way too proud to admit it. Very sad.

My argument is that young players that Championship teams sign for seven-figure sums tend to be considered as viable first team options for Championship clubs. Certainly true for the Sunderland players you listed, but sadly not true of Bassette.

He played a fair few amount of games last year so your argument is pretty redundant.

If the lad does have an attitude problem, then part of the managers job is to deal with that. It’s called man management.
He is young and still has time to develop into a top class striker,we should be looking at a way to get the best out of him.
Not getting rid because it’s too much trouble.

And now he’s back on the first ferry to the French second division. £2.5 million well spent?

Thanks for the discussion anyway.
