100% because we’re actually making efforts to cross earlier at the byline.

How many times under MR and Carr did we get to the byline not cross it? Too often a phase of play would look something like this:
We get to a crossing position and the would-be crosser passes it back to another player, maybe another 1-2 back and forth passes before recycling back to midfield to then shift it to the opposite wing and repeat until we lose the ball. In the meantime, the opposition just sits in a defensive shape and have 3-4 players dealing with one striker in the box.

Compare that with both goals yesterday, the ball was whipped in quicker and before defenders could pick up our attackers in the box. Rudoni arrived late and in space. The same thing happened v WBA but Torp missed an easy header.
Agree with all of this except the last bit, Torp narrowly missed with a diving header while also putting himself in danger from a boot to the head from one of our own players!

Maybe I’m being too harsh because I haven’t watched the replay from WBA and the chance happened at the opposite end of the away fans.

He's not ready to lead the line as a sole striker.

There's plenty of raw ability, but he's got to be paired up with Simms or as an impact sub.
Apologies for the subject line....where the f*ck "myth" has come from I'm unsure...it was supposed to be just "Bassette"
I was drunk yesterday (yes that early due to a rare celebration)
Am I able to edit the subject of thread?

Simms to start next week Vs Pompey. We are getting so many crosses in. He will come good.
The way we're playing under Frank so far will suit Simms.
Less of the ball to his feet back to goal and more just piping it into him.
Give him service in front of goal and he'll score, he's not the type to make the chance himself.

The Cayman Islands.
Kid has a future for sure but it is very odd that a guy with basically no goal scoring pedigree and who has been pretty ineffective so far this season (if we are honest) is starting over our and west broms top goalscorers from last season. Either he is immense in training... or Simms really isn't...

The latter and Wright being injured.

He had 9 unsuccessful touches and dispossessions yesterday.

Next most was a few players on 3.

Just don't think he's ready to lead the line yet. Though I appreciate that's as much down to Simms' poor form and Wright's injury as much as his ability.

Yeah but someone thinks it is better to drop him out after scoring in matches. And putting in the required performance.

Hes definitely not ready to lead our attack but........... 100% better option than Simms on current form.

Especially when we have utter shite in the central areas, Torp and Eccles ain't feeding nothing, no though balls what so ever.

Application is spot on from Bassette, it's just a shame he hasn't got O'Hare and Hamer behind him, because he'd have bagged 10 by now.

He and BTA played yesterday due to their work rate. Norwich were always going to have lots of the ball. It was the same as the Spurs game in thinking. If Simms wants to be a top player and therefore be an instant pick he’s got a lot of basic skills to work on such as trapping, passing and pressing.

I’d have been more inclined to accept the Bassette experiment if we were floating aimlessly around L1. Like the 14/15 season…

This is not his level, either yet or not at all.

Just to add to that...and shooting and heading

Bassette is brilliant for a high press. Slight issue is he is the only player that is pressing
Is he actually that good at pressing? How many times has he won possession in the opposition half?

His work rate is excellent, I can give him that. He’s very easy to defend against.

He runs a lot but he just gets played around most of the time, you can't press at full pelt because you leave yourself exposed. Just re-watching Saturday's game now without the many beers and see how easy Norwich got out, because both him and BTA are not intelligent pressers.

I’d like to see us sit a lot deeper. Add in EMC and Wright next Simms up front and then look to hit balls behind defences when we win it back in our own half.

The midfield is just really badly stretched most games and has been all season.

I think the point about why Bassette and BTA played at Norwich may be true. However I would question the utility of work rate when Bassette failed to stay onside on so many occasions on Saturday - there were a number of times that play carried on despite a raised Lino flag (which I thought hardly ever happened these days).

He is also on a one-man mission to disprove the old adage that you can be a successful one-footed footballer if you’re very left footed.

It will develop, hopefully. Gyokeres in his first two seasons was the same, he’d do all his twist and turns to get onto his right foot. That changed in 22/23 and it made him a way better striker who was far more difficult to defend against.

Bassette shows many of the same raw attributes than Vik but it’s clear as day that he’s just not good enough in the here and now. Hes had a good run in the team and hasn’t offered much.

It probably looks like I've got a thing against Bassette at this point but I really don't. There's a hell of a talent there & he could be some player in the future if coached & nurtured correctly. At the moment though, Lampard is doing neither the team or the player any favours by selecting him so often.

He's in the 6th percentile for tackles won by strikers in the league this season... so not many.

A bit better though on blocked passes where he is in the 70th percentile.

He really isn't

I'm ready to listen. What, on current form, does Simms offer that Bassette doesn't? I've seen all the stats - both not good enough. I've watched all the games - both not good enough.

This is nigh on identical to Simms, apart from Simms playing in more matches.

1736167364306.png

All xG stats are narrowly in favour of Bassette. Shots on target ratio in favour of Bassette.

Bassette Simms

1736167066574.png 1736167122053.png

The graph in the corner top right corner is collated over 365 days, so not a fair comparison after Simm's did very well around this time last season.

For me there's no way any of us can say one is currently better than the other. All we can go on what we are seeing on the pitch ........ not a lot.

Bassette is 2 years younger than gyokeres was when he was written off by Swansea. Got to give him time to develop and looks to have some decent raw attributes.
Not helped that he was completely over hyped by a few initially so now others feel they have to be overly critical to even it up.

Those graphs show we badly miss Wright and EMC.

You'd have to imagine when both are fit it'll be Wright down the middle and EMC on the left.
