Today I watched how many times Adam Barton took the ball and did his usual trickery, then passed the ball forward or back - On around 15 occasions he had the ball with time to move and then set about turning, stopping, stepping over, dummying but then ultimately passed the ball back. On only two occasions did he move the ball forward. He simply slows the game down at times when we are on the offensive and this allows the opposition time to get back. Though I don't question his ability at close quarters, what he does on the ball is ultimately ineffective for the most part - particularly at the Ricoh.

Contrast this with Maddison, another player that possesses close skills. Granted he plays further forward but his instinct is to move forward as quickly and efficiently as possible and hurt the opposition. He could be one hell of a player.

Different types of player entirely....both have attributes and weaknesses.

That outside the boot pass was outrageous. Something you would expect from Mata or Ozil.

Just on the half way line. Was almost like a flick out wide.

Maddison I can't find fault with as yet other than physically he looks lightweight compared to everyone else, though over time I would assume this will be worked on by coaches. Barton possesses bags of skill but doesn't produce. Both skilful, both capable of taking on opponents. I think that these two possess similar skills, though neither has an up-and-down the pitch engine like Ward. I just find Barton frustrating .

I'd disagree, they may both be 'technical' players but they posses different attributes for the different positions they play.

One possesses the ability to pass the ball backwards, but wants to score goals. The other wants to score goals.

Please don't! He's not due out of his padded cell till Tuesday.

It's nice to have the peace and comfort on here today, while he continues his weekly electro-shock treatment therapy.

I dont want to put too much pressure on the boy BUT james maddison is the most technically gifted player we have had since robbie keane. Big statement i know...but i challenge anyone to find a better comparison. This boy will make it at the top level without doubt, we need to keep him for the next 2 years at least and make him the main man, build our team around him. Mowbray wants people to return to the ricoh, well id pay money alone to see this boy play!

Way too much praise as yet. Prosodic received the pass of the match from Barton and hit the post!

Maddison made much more of an impact in his 20 minute cameo than Barton did in the whole 75 minutes he was on the pitch. I have seen Barton play worse to be fair, he did knock good throughball for Prosch but he is too slow negative and ponderous in posession, he seems nervous of trying to create or accelerate moving forward which is a shame. I think he has it in his locker but as he has never done it think we can only afford one of either Barton or Fleck in start xi in midfield as they are too similiar......for me Fleck would just get the nod over Barton!

Thought both Madison and Phillips did well when they came on......Odelusi however.....erm!!!

Yep. I don't think there is room for Barton AND Fleck in the same team either and if it comes down to a straight choice, I think we have to go with Fleck.

As you say, Barton has it in his locker, but hardly ever produces a very good performance. On the ball yesterday he did some good stuff, but off the ball he was very, very poor once more.

And that's the difference between an average player and a good player. Every player has it in his locker to produce a bit of magic or a MOTM performance now and then, but it's doing that consistently that determines whether you're a good player or not.
