Today I watched how many times Adam Barton took the ball and did his usual trickery, then passed the ball forward or back - On around 15 occasions he had the ball with time to move and then set about turning, stopping, stepping over, dummying but then ultimately passed the ball back. On only two occasions did he move the ball forward. He simply slows the game down at times when we are on the offensive and this allows the opposition time to get back. Though I don't question his ability at close quarters, what he does on the ball is ultimately ineffective for the most part - particularly at the Ricoh.
Contrast this with Maddison, another player that possesses close skills. Granted he plays further forward but his instinct is to move forward as quickly and efficiently as possible and hurt the opposition. He could be one hell of a player.
