We’ll not score a total of 4 goals in our next 7 games.

Wouldn’t be surprised if we lost this. Confidence very fragile still, but if we do win it I wouldn’t put it past us to get a result against Bournemouth.

somewhere online theirs a really long winded scouting report on our pressing style, it’s a fascinating read for reds fans, but will probably bore the tits off you lot. Nonetheless If you’re interested in reading it let me know and I’ll try and find it for ya.
we’re a really good side but we just can’t score, if you go back over the stats from our last 20 games you’ll be really surprised at just how dominant we’ve been without scoring.

Gerhard Struber’s intense pressing system at Barnsley

When he was appointed as Barnsley manager in November, Gerhard Struber was a relative unknown to the typical English football fan, but the Austrian had begun to make a name for himself in Europe with his high intensity philosophy and his success at Wolfsberger AC. When he was appointed, Barnsley...

Whilst we like to play from the back, we’re not exactly a team that runs up the possession stat. For possession, we were about mid table last night and on Friday we won with 38% possession. Against Barnsley, if they’re going to press all day, we’ll probably let them have the ball and hit them on the counter.

I fancy us for the win here, with the added bonus of having friends and family who support Barnsley.

An interesting read - a young team like us too.
As mucca says, we like playing it from the back, so the high push will be good to watch (or maybe not...).
Red bull influence on the manager as well.
I think it will be a different game to Bristol/QPR, who both looked to dominate us with possession and we soaked up some pressure - Barnsley may be happy to let us have the ball and then force us into mistakes.

you’ll see what I mean on Saturday. We’ve need a clinical striker who can press we don’t have one. That’s all we are short, if ours develop that side of the game, or we sign one we’ll be a force to be reckoned with.

Over the years we've been a bit of a bogey team for you. That's unusual because in most leagues we've played in about half the teams we play have been our bogey teams, and hardly any see us as theirs.

You were much the better side when I watched you play West Brom at Oakwell last season, but I think it ended up 2-2. Think it will be a good game on Saturday. You may be surprised.

Edited for three typos

Another difficult game tbh. I work with a Barnsley fan who is a lovely bloke as people from S Yorks generally are.

They're a decent side and might have been got some fortune in what happened to Wigan, but don't forget what a hard run in they had.

I would be happy with a point.

Barnsley are a good side that play attractive football as do we I think it could be a really good game and could go either way tbh.

Getting a win under our belt this season doesn't automatically mean we should be thinking of teams such as Barnsley as cannon fodder. Granted they survived by the skin of their teeth last season, but they also have a whole season of Championship experience behind them and from reports posted on this thread, they compensate for a lack of quality in comparison to others in the league by having a clear understanding of how to make it difficult for opponents.

So, despite what some fans are inferring, I don't expect this to be a routine win whatsoever.

As long as Neil Redfern isn’t playing we should get a result.

Barnsley are a good side and play in a similar style to us.

Should be a good game, I'd be delighted with a draw.

and had 19 shots, only got 4 on target, posts, side nettings, and row P when it was easier to score. I’d say we’ll start taking our chances at some point, but I’ve been saying it since December and now I really don’t think we will.

Let’s face it, they’re 2-0 up before we start. Chaplin and Thomas have got goals written all over them

Another 3-2

Chaplin is a strange one. Never really impressed me when he was here (obviously had his moments, like all strikers do), now he's an established starting championship striker??

He clearly had talent, I just don't think we harnessed it in the correct way.

In the formation we used, I think he often found himself isolated from the midfield, hence why he was dropping deep so often. It's a cliche but in hindsight, playing him up top on his own was probably never going to work really and to be fair, if I remember correctly we were actually warned by several Portsmouth fans on social media/forums etc. that he wasn't suited to such a role.

At Barnsley he's playing off another striker with Thomas just in behind which gives him more freedom to get into the box and allow him to take on the poacher role, which in my opinion suits his game far better. So, if you spell it out on paper it's not that much of a surprise really.

I think they signed him based on analytics/stats, he obviously fits in with their criteria for whatever they look for in a player

Certainly wouldn't have been on his goal scoring record

He’s an established championship starter in a forward position because he never stops working.
Patrick Schmidt & Cauley Woodrow are far better strikers but they don’t work as hard as he does without the ball and that’s the priority for us under this head coach.

Scoring goals.
As I’ve said last season, we had the 2nd best pressing stats in the league behind Leeds, and only just behind them, which is good in itself, but when you think we only got our head coach in October it’s even better. Add to that the fact we finished 5th in the XG table, it highlights we create lots of chances. We were prone to silly mistakes at the back, but we’ve gotten much better in that area overall the last 10/15 games or so, our massive weakness is our inability to put our chances away.

What are your stats like for chest traps? Also how many throw-ins per game?

To be fair to Chaplin he worked hard for us. he got in positions but just couldn’t finish. I assume his confidence dropped.

It’s worked out well for all parties though. He scores goals for you, he’s got his confidence back and and we replaced him with someone who works for us. Happens all the time don’t it

He missed horrendous sitters week after week but could also score the occasional screamer. We got a good price and he got a good move

You're shit enough to go down but you may be lucky as points deductions and Wycombe will mean there may only be 1 relegation place up for grabs.
