I never really get the hype of the premier league and actually will chip in with my two pence worth regarding Spanish football.

The standard is pretty shit all round and players like Messi play against defences like of Ipswich week in week out. The stats don't really impress me much for that reason.

Messi's free-kick was brilliant, but alongside those and penalties, his goals are nearly always the same (top of the box curling shot). Ronaldo has been a much better all rounder but they've both been really special players.

Still, I'm not really a fan of all this shit. Certainly heard enough tripe from Liverpool fans today.

spanish teams routinely do well in europa so whilst its a little top heavy their mid table teams are clearly very good.

Would messi have scored 600 goals playing in Italy during the 90s early 2000s is kind of what I’m getting at , I very very very much doubt it

You only have to look at ronaldos goal return in Italy compared to his goal return in Spain for starters , and serie a was better in the 90s/2000s

Messi has spent the best part of his career being serviced by probably the best midfield trio of all time, quite often playing against farmers and waiters turning out for the likes of Huesca and Leganes, he's bound to be scoring a unforeseen amount of goals. When Ronaldo played in that league he averaged 1.07 goals a game over 9 years, just think about that for a moment. Right players, right leagues, right time.

You can't compare era's by numbers of goals, you cant really compare them at all, especially 30 years apart.

Out of interest, if Huesca and Leganes players are farmers and waiters, what are Fulham and Huddersfields?

The majority are international level footballers owned by their club, the lower level cubs in Spain are made up of below average Spanish players and loans from clubs such as Watford, Southampton and even West Brom. It's no wonder the big teams and players in La Liga have these outrageous goal scoring stats.

You can compare standards of the top 6, maybe even top half of La Liga and the Prem, but every 2nd week the top La Liga teams basically get a "bye week" against the lower league, whereas I don't think there is ever a gimmy in the Premier League, maybe a Huddersfield comes around every few years but nowhere near on the regularity of La Liga

prem is becoming la liga. super 2,good 6 or 7 after then rest get fucked. thats what £££ does to a league

would add that likes of getafe and alavaes would be called farmers and waiters by the uneducated but they are currently fighting it out for top 4 and champions league qualification. it really isnt anywhere near as poor as some say imo. Bottom club rayo valecano beat real madrid the other day,i couldnt see huddersfield doing that at mo lol. not saying they better but just not as bad as some say.

100%. It's only people who don't ever watch it who say it. Plus the argument Messi scores goals because he's playing against farmers is put to bed when you consider his goal per game ratio against the top 6 English sides is 0.81, let alone the durge from the bottom half.

Yeah great point.

I find putting down other leagues quite odd. They all offer something different and for a football fan that is great

Although it’s worth noting his goal to game ratio against English sides improved dramatically when players like Ashley Cole ,John terry ,carvalho, Ferdinand ,vidic, Neville , evra etc etc retired or moved on .

His record in recent years against English teams is phenomenal , never scored against Chelsea for 8/9 matches and his record on English soil was abysmal ....until now

His record was also bad in Italy until the greats retired , now he scores against Italian teams for fun too , specifically AC Milan , coincidence ? I think not

From the BBC commentator just before kick off. Only 2 Barcelona players will have experienced this atmosphere tonight, Messi and Vermaelen from his Arsenal days (????Coutinho and Suarez are playing????)

Over the course of the 135 minutes played so far , it’s still hard to believe Liverpool are 3-1 down so far , simply the better team

Only difference being that the Spanish top 2 will always remain top 2. The prem has rotated a lot over the last 10 years

Anyone who didn't bother watching this as they thought it was game over might want to switch on.

I said as much last week. Liverpool could do this, that Barca defence has looked shaky since the first leg against United. They can crumble, and they have. Can see Liverpool scoring again.

They certainly know how to make a roaring comeback in a European game, don't they!?

Just need to run at their full backs.

Wind Suarez up as will and get him sent off.

What I don’t get is why the away goal rule applies in extra time. It’s stupid
