Atmosphere (21 Viewers)

Some great away days in that spell I agree, but I'd also say two of the best away atmospheres of recent years have been this season (Derby and Stoke).

Stoke was very good. Gives me hope!

Which is a shame. We were in that 10% for years.

As I've said many times, there's no banter between fans anymore. It used to be what made the corner so good even when games were shit.

And then we became a proper, serious club.

I don’t see what the problem is anyway. We’re still one of the most atmospheric grounds in the championship. Most clubs would kill for the atmosphere we have

That's what happens when you drop thousands of people into a stand that don't actually want to stand and make an atmosphere.

It's a very weird dynamic in that stand. You've got lads in Stone Island boozed up next to mum's with children.
It's not for everyone - I get that but there is a lot of nothingness.

Re the incident: I presume the lad in the green bobble hat who was led out by half of WMP in the second half was the object throwing culprit?
If proven, that's a lengthy stadium ban.

I'd orgotten about that, I was referring to the opposite corner when EMC (I think) was hacked down. But yeah, that also was a bit of a spark. Missed the missile being thrown but saw there player move it off the pitch. No need.

I think we're edging into the average Championship atmosphere.

We're capable of some proper noise once or twice a game but the majority of the game is no different to going to somewhere like Swansea.

Which championship clubs are better then?

I don't think any stand out currently. That's the point, we used to be miles ahead alongside Boro.

Will be interesting to see how they are Tuesday because they were very quiet last year when their 'ultras' boycotted. Pompey were good last month.

Portsmouth are the best in the division but I can’t think of many other obvious contenders.

People shouldn’t be too surprised. We were a club with a huge siege mentality for years and 21/22 the fans were returning to not just the stadium but the Championship. More off field nonsense followed and the fans bought completely into being a club defiant of circumstances.

We aren’t that club anymore, a whole load of new/returning fans are at games now (which is a great thing) and far from being underdogs in this league, we’re as good as or better than anyone else. If we go up maybe the plucky underdog status will sway it back to how it was before, who knows.

I thought today was very good overall, but I get annoyed (more than I should) by how early people leave for half time and how long it takes them to come back. Does something happen in the concourse I don't know about? The amount of goals scored just before or after half time this season when the ground is only 2/3 full is crazy.

At one point after we took the lead, I thought I'd gone deaf it was so quiet!!! I know we were strangling the fight out of them, but you could hear the players shouting to each other......... very weird sensation
It happened recently in another game , I just wanted to leave.

Exactly. We're a proper club now

If you can't name more than one thats better, we aren't average

I lost my shit with a father and son combo who have sat behind me since we came back to the CBS. So negative about the players every week for years. At 2 nil down were saying Eccles wasn't up to it and calling Simms a carthorse. Used quite a few words I shouldn't have. I did feel smug when both of them scored. We're top of the league and still they moan. Feel a bit of a knob now I've calmed down though. Sorry not sorry.

I am in complete agreement with this. It is fair comment.

I am unsure why it matters though, that is good enough for me in regards to helping or its effect on the team?

That’s not a loaded question or statement, I say it in terms of home results, the CBS being a tough place to come .. we have the best home win % over the last 18 months in the league.

Personally I think our players are grafting in those quieter periods to earn that “proper noise” - I think on the whole the atmosphere/fans are in sync with the players and on pitch performance.

When you compare yesterday's game with the one against Bristol City a few years back, same scoreline. It could not be more different. The atmosphere at the Bristol game was insane, yesterday was so dull considering we had come back from 2-0 down.

It doesn't help that our songs are mostly shit. We haven't replaced the Gyokeres, Hamer and O'Hare chants and the Rudoni one, I keep singing "city's 45". Everyone keeps suggesting ballads, we need quick punchy ones.

I'm no good at making them up but I'll guarantee that I'm one of the voices trying to get them going.

Maybe people just prefer to sit quietly and critique every minute of the game instead of getting involved in the spectacle.

Is the atmosphere as good as it was,a,couple of years, ago, definitely not.
Is it better thanmost of the other grounds we visit, certainly.

Not anymore.

Louder than Stoke yeah, not on the same planet as Pompey and Wrexham in our last three away games.

Boro probably the same on Tuesday.

We were as good if not better than all three of those 18 months ago.

Your basing this on individual games. Wrexham fan I know says it was by far their best home atmosphere all season, said it's been really flat for some games. That's football. Boro on Tuesday will probably be up for it because of the occasion, but run of the mill games? Last two visits there haven't been all that good at all. People are overthinking it. Occasion and the game itself can drive it. That Boro game at the end of last season was about as good as I can ever recall and at any ground. I've also been to Pompey when it's been average. Even this season I've seen posts from fans of clubs like Norwich and Sheffield United staying they wish they had a home atmosphere like ours, and that's us being a bit below par.

Which goes back to my previous point, we've become the average.

It is what it is, I'm slowly getting used to it.

Let's hope if we get promoted some more people can find a way to move over to the South Stand. Would make all the difference.

You’d hope if we went up that the siege mentality would return and so would the reliably good atmospheres when we’re half expecting to get pumped every week.

It's still good imo, maybe just not as good as it was. Live And Die in These Towns is still superb, I imagine it is relatively intimidating in the away ends. What with the fireworks and grey sky it felt more like an evening game than a 12:30 kick off.

Some of the newish songs just have no pace to them and that doesn't help. We still have Let's All Sing Together, but it needs to be belted out with passion and keep going to the end. It is distinctly and uniquely Cov.

Twist and Shout started yesterday, but for me it is a song which works best when either 3-0 up of 5-0 down. Despite no obvious threat, I was too nervous to sing during the last 10 mins that all WBA needed was one chance to snatch a draw, when we really should have been 5-2 up or so..
