With the season starting tomorrow, and by the looks of itour Squad pretty much complete.Doubt we will add to it now, (Barring 1 more striker we are looking at). How do we really feel about our chances this season

Me, I look at the others and I can honestly say I feel wewill finish top 1 - 6.
We have International players, Players that would compete in the Championship at least, and Players that are highly rated but yet to reach that potential. Why not now?
Our Stadium is awesome compared to the shitholes we will visit, yes we have lost support, but most in this league get 5k on a good day.We will average between 12 - 20k depending on performance. Our Away support alone will be 1 of the best most Clubs will get this season without doubt.
I honestly look around and think we will be fine, I am more optimistic this year than anytime in the last 5 say.

Confident or Arrogant?

The attitude of the players & their management will be key - not their potential

Potentially we have as good as squad as anyone else - if they have a winning mentality & work hard we should be fine

We have a team now to challenge for a top 6 in my opinion but my major concern now is AT. I am still behind him but in this league I can only give him 10 games at max before I start to turn.

We need to get out of this league within 12 months its as simple as that but if we are sitting mid table starting to drift after 10 games then Thorn has to go.

Thorn as a scout has proved himself but now is the real test. He stepped up and now he has to step up as a manager.

10 games.

We can challenge for the top 6 in my view, but a lot of our signings are unknown quantities. The first few games will give us a much better idea of where we are.

I am somewhere between hopeful and confident.

I wish some of the bad press surrounding the club wasn't there on the eve of a new season - the court case regarding the unpaid rent, and the evident anger with regards the 'alterations' to the players contracts; as this can't give rise to a contented squad.

That stated, the squad does look good enough to be there-or-thereabouts, and accordingly, it's up to Thorn to prove his worth

All of those points are pretty valid - we should be challenging for a top six place without a doubt. A few concerns I have would be - Andy Thorn's overconfidence on certain players. this league is an unknown quantity to us, it worries me when he throws out comments like Cody Macdonald will be the top scorer in League 1 next season - how can he possibly know that? Also, someone else bought up a good point about getting the winning mentality, as with this club it certainly hasnt been there for a number of years. and yes, big changes to the squad mean we need them to blend well early.

but aside from the concerns, we should have more than enough quality player wise to finish top 6. I actually see us being very good away from home this season - like you mention big away support (by league 1 standards) and less expectations where as at home i think the team will be under big pressure (although should still win more often then not).

im going to predict 4th - oh and hello all newly registered cov fan here.

Very confident, we have built up a good squad and I believe we will be at the top again by next season. I have faith in AT to do well this season as he has signed up a lot of good players and hopefully a new striker which could add to all our goals.

Don't get the attitude that so many people have regarding our ground. People keep saying that we have one of the best grounds in the league as if this is going to have any affect on performances. No away team is going to be intimidated travelling to a more than half empty, souless, legoland style stadium in the middle of nowhere. As a player I'd be more intimidated going to a traditional ground where the fans aren't half a mile away from the pitch.

I'm just hopeful, albeit with perhaps more confidence than in recent memory (due to plying our trade in a lower division and having made some new signings to create a - numerically, at least - 'stronger squad'). Don't know enough about our new lads or the other teams to say whether this hope is realistic... you don't have to support Cov for very long to feel like a 'long-suffering fan'. Since we dropped out of the top flight, hopeful optimism has waned, to say the least. I think we are going to finish higher in the League than I can remember (I didn't see much of our first season in the Championship as I was away at uni - can't remember where we ended up, but think I have missed our highest finish in my lifetime thus far, so my time is now!). I think Thorn will go during the season if we don't look like we are challenging in or around the Play Offs. While I think he gets some unfair stick on here (less so than his 'supporters' seem to; all manner of fantastical assertions tend to be attributed to anyone who doesn't write him off as shit - although I am sure that works the other way too), I think we need to be challenging this season. I don't want to spend years here, I want to go up. I'm looking forward to the new season and hoping that optimism builds as it continues.

Why not write a biography whilst your at it?:/

First season down we finished around 10th, dropped away drastically the last few months. Our highest finish in the 2nd Division was 8th under Micky Adams I think.

Confident? Yeah I am a bit :p
Arrogant? No not a bit - 20+ points after 10 games and yeah I'd be getting that way :)
Suicidal? 15 points or less 10 games in and I'd be gutted :( can't take another year like last year

Like the majority of posters to this thread the squad does indeed look attractive and fit for purpose for this season.

My only fear is the tactics AT will instill on the team - I felt last year we were ultra defensive, particularly with Sideways Sammy and the reluctance by ANY midfielder to push forward, it looked obvious this was the preferred playing style and despite tinkering all it gave us was 9 wins and relegation.

We need to be more adventurous in our play - easier said than done I know - instead of trying to walk the ball into the net let us have more first time speculative shooting.

Just look at the times Kieren Westwood was rooted to the spot watching 25 yard missiles explode the back of the net from the opposition, same with Joe Murphy but not to the same extent (strange that)

So AT free the shackles, go for goal and a top 6 finish is a certainty with automatic promotion spots a distinct possibility.

Sounds a bit arrogant tbh.

Your opinion - thanks....but why? what i have listed should fill us suffering fans with confidence. If you can rip all i have put apart, then maybe arrogant it is. But i have tried to be factual and not just slated the opposistion with un biased statements.

I mentioned the Stadium, more in the fact that yes we are a bigger club than most in this league so we should play to that affect, we are a bigger club and this season in this league i do believe it will show.

Because I look at PNE - internationals? Check (e.g Hulme). Players that would compete in the championship? Check (lots of champ experience) Proven manager? Check (brown sacked dec), big stadium? Check (17.5k highest attendance last season).

Top 6 finish? Nope 15th

I would like to think we can push for a promotion place. Very important to get a good start so we don't let heads drop and have everyone thinking 'here we go again'. What could be key this season is what happens in the January window. If we're doing well and pushing for promotion there's a good chance we'll get offers for some of our players. The response to that could decide if we can maintain a promotion push or not but that's a while down the road so let's concentrate on being in a decent position in January first.

Probably and they were predicted a top 6 finish, while Stevenage were tipped for relegation

...Oooh pardon me...

....I just don't buy all this guff that we're contenders..... I'm 41 years old & followed city since the 1970's & We have NEVER been contenders in any division since I was born.

I don't see that changing just cos we've found our level.

17th.

stu is incredibly scared of league one and all the clubs in it

yes some teams struggle but some teams jump back up first time of asking too,we shouldnt fear anyone.

It is not the City or the fans level, whatever people say about apathy. We are a big, one Club city with a big ground and decent potential fanbase... we should be plying our trade at a higher level than this, but the team and manager have to earn the right. I'm a decade younger than you, but still well enough versed in the lack of excitement and success in the life of a Cov fan. I still want us in or around the Play Offs... give me a further ten years in this league or lower and I will modify my hopeful optimism accordingly.

Very few teams jump back the first time of asking...in fact I believe that only 3 teams have done it during our championship years.

The arrogance is all this 'league one tour' rubbish people are spouting. Massive underestimation of the opposition, who have plenty of players that will cause us problems. My worry is that to some extent, people are expecting us to walk through the league and we could see Thorn turned on very quickly if results don't go our way early on.

Nothing wrong though with looking at things objectively and thinking we're one of 10-12 teams that could realistically fancy their chances of promotion, and should be up there come the end of the season.

A lot of people keep saying "It is only so and so" as if we have a given right to win every game this season.
