You might expect that a professional footballer would have enough professionalism to look after himself for one day and to do his own light training Christmas day if needed

This varies from club to club, some do some don't often depends how the team is going at the time. Some will be called in later on in the day if they are away depending on the distance to travel.

Professional athletes should have rest days so why not Xmas Day? It's not like if they come in that day they will all suddenly become Messi. Hardly think he's saying stay at home get pissed and eat as much as you want.
