These pathetic gangs are running riot. They need to be dragged out of bed at 5am at gunpoint and sent down for anything they possibly can be.

immediate custodial for carrying a knife would be a start.

I've lived in some pretty shitty places, Bethnal Green and Walthamstow stand out, but have never felt as wary as I have the couple of times I've been out in the city centre since moving back here 3 years ago.

Was at the Empire last night on Far Gosford Street and the atmosphere in the area was not great, general feeling of tension with gangs of people hanging around and people openly drug dealing. No sign of any police of course.

Just how bad was it, Dave. I am very interested to know. I am in talks to book The Box down there and it will be a show which includes children as well as adults, so it is quite key for me, because it is the one thing that is putting me off.

Would people go to see a show if they had to walk past and through Far Gosford Street on a Friday or Saturday night?

Would appreciate thoughts from anyone who has been down that way of an evening, especially the weekend.

Far Gosford Street? It's not the best when all the little twats are lurking about with their man bags over their shoulders.

Yes, I know. It concerns me. The Box is the new venue at Fargo. My concern is that many going would probably walk up Far Gosford St from town.

You'd obviously have no trouble from the car park to Fargo as they're right next to each other. I wouldn't go near that other little car park on the junction with Sky Blue Way.

The drug dealing would depend on how streetwise, to use Robins favourite phrase, people are. if I walked my Mum and Dad up there doubt they'd notice a thing.

For me there were too many groups of lads hanging around outside places who were too old to be hanging around. Seemed a bit like one wrong look and it might all kick off. Having said that there's some nice places up there and they had people in them and there's a ton of students about who tend to be more annoying that ay sort of threat so its not some sort of no go area.

Thing that surprised me most was the lack of security / police. I lived near a similar road in Pompey (Albert Road for any locals) and every bar etc there would have security outside as well as police to nip any trouble in the bud, no sign of anyone on Far Gosford St. Thing the vibe would improve significantly if they did that and moved on the people hanging around.

Yep that's the big difference relative to a few years ago when there were no weapons used but the usual kids in their LA trainers, shamballas and Pauls' boutique jackets and Obey snapbacks, all hanging out in Mcdonalds' courtesy of their mates' purchase of a McFlurry. The staff cannot kick them out for this reason. Back when I was a kid they used to all go there before a rave - I don't know if these raves still happen, and I get th feeling they are less frequent, but it gives them even more time to spend in the Burges.

It was and still is so intimidating to have an ordinary meal in McDonalds when these kids are swarming the place.

The car park is very small though. The Box seats 250.

Its really said. I used to go into town every Friday and Saturday in my youth (late 80s / early 90s) and you'd very rarely see any trouble and if you did 99% of the time it was a 1 on 1 punch up.

18 spaces in the car park right next to Fargo.

Their official car park is 2-3 mins walk up Paynes Lane.

I think the effect is amplified by the presence of social media. They used to go there and BBM (Blackberry Messenger) each other when I was in school, now they have top of the range iPhones and whatnot. I actually used to question - how do these parents let them get away with it - how, for instance, do they fund their McDonalds (which, mind you, is not cheap relative to so-called 'pocket money'), especially not if they are spending the entire day in there.

The Box is the cheapest though by far, though they are all expensive.

Although I imagine it's still quite a bit more expensive have you looked at the Albany Theatre? There's also the Coal Vaults etc around the Canal Basin although I'm not sure of capacity.

Coal Vaults are too small. The Albany is about two grand a night I believe.

Cheers for the thought though.

My son was in town and in a pub it kicked off and everybody in the pub was fighting.
He said to me was it was like that " in my day " ? I said yes every weekend. But we fought with fists and anything at hand. He said somebody got stabbed. Is it any different ?

Unless I’m just a pissed up oblivious approaching middle age man. I’ve literally seen trouble in town about 5 times in 18 years. Admittedly I’m not out 3 nights a week these days like I used to be though.

I think Far Gosford Street has a particular problem though. Seems to be a few gang related things going on down there.

Seemed ok last time I stumbled out of scholars. Maybe all the teenagers are in bed at 3am.

Not saying there isn’t a problem, and there’s obviously an issue with stabbings etc, but no doubt you’d have been shitting yourself from me and my mates who used to hang around Gosford street when we got bored of Hillfields.

All joking aside. I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Enjoy your night.

Has anybody in here ever been involved in violence ? I mean getting stuck in ?

No but at school there were a lot of them. It was sickening to watch at times, even though of course most teenagers find them entertaining. What I did not like was the fact that these were people with often troubled lives at home.

When I do a google search of some of the trouble makers at school, it saddens me to see that they have also been on the wrong side of the law - drug dealing, glassing bottles over peoples head completely unprovoked, being perverts, etc. Makes me think that for some people their natural instinct/disposition is to be troublemaking.

I recall a night out in Cov, some group of lads started to cause some agro.... I decided it was inevitable to kick off and got in first, and lamped the ringleader, apparently breaking his nose.... we jumped in a taxi and got out of there...

stupidly we went back to the Colly the following Saturday and left at exactly the same time... inevitability they were waiting for me and in their words “taught me a lesson” (in reality a few of them jumped me and I took a couple of kicks whilst on the floor...)

Scary thing is today I’d probably be dead with a knife in my stomach in the same situation...

I’ve punched one person in my whole life. He started on my mate when we were out. In the Colly as above actually. I broke my hand. Sat in Cov & Warwick hospital for 3 days waiting for a slot for my operation. Decided after that I’m definitely not a fighter. Ha ha.

I don't want to glorify violence. My life was years of fighting and violence, 4 prison sentences for violence. In and out of prison, do you want to have a fight ? I would take you on. I got beat up ended in hospital, come out and do it again. What gets me is people getting aggressive online and on social media, but do they know what violence means ?

You’ve mentioned that on here before and from when we used to see you before games for a beer etc I had no idea. Bit of a shock when you mentioned it as you don’t come across like that at all anymore.
