A few years ago I had a particularly feral class. Momentarily I turned my back and someone threw a not inconsiderable object at my head, hit me somewhere near my eye. Logged the incident in full and senior leaders said they would investigate. They found out who did and gave him the almighty penalty of 2 days internal suspension. I didn’t find out who it was, I wasn’t told of his ‘punishment’ and it took the union’s involvement to get the information.

This was at a large comp in Coventry. Left it the same year. If you brought canes back it would likely get nicked and used to assault the teacher.

I was caned routinely at school.
I can honestly say I have seen people jailed for far lesser assaults and without using a weapon.

I don’t wish I could hit a child but I do wish I didn’t have to talk courteously to one who is treating me like shit on a shoe. If a teacher tried a cane now they’d probably end up in A+E themselves

I'm not neccessarily against caning, just find it strange that people have been jailed for a push or a punch yet a grown adult can use his full weight to bring a cane down on an 11 year olds hand and that's acceptable.
From my perspective, I hated detentions because I had far more important things to do like vandalism,fucking about and chasing girls so I just refused to attend them until they eventually caned me which was preferable to having my precious time wasted.

Exactly, a lot of them have no respect. What happens when the parents get called? No doubt the parents will give the school hassle that their baby has been told off.

I'd have been petrified if the school phoned my parents.

Thing is, I was a cheeky little c**t and a gobshite. But if/when word got ba k to my parents I faced punishment at home.

I know lots of teachers and it seems to be a thing today that some parents won't accept their kids can be in the wrong.
Some of the worse culprits are from so called decent areas as well.

It did used to work the other way. I can remover a teacher knocking my mate to the floor. It all got smoothed over and he kept his job.
Was actually a decent bookend I'm glad it didn't go further but I think he just lost it that day.

I was dragged up in most of the areas mentioned on here. I hung around with those who got in trouble. Most of those who got in trouble came from broken homes. But I was brought up in a single parent household.

Good parenting is very important. Bad parenting is a disaster.

I think you're definitely onto something there.

I recently witnessed a child repeatedly misbehaving. The kid (6 years old) kept poking the pregnant family dog which was causing the dog great distress. The grandfather who owned the dog calmly told the kid to leave the dog alone about five times but he simply kept going back to the dog while the parents didn't seemed bothered. The grandfather then raised his voice slightly and said "for goodness sake, will you please leave the dog alone!"

The child's father's blood drained from his face as he turned to his father (the grandfather) and loudly said "Do not speak to my child like that!" in front of everyone while his c*nt kid happily carried on pestering the poor dog.

Kid will probably grow up to be a stabber.

Agree respect is essential and has disappeared.
Not sure successive governments have done their bit . certainly haven't respected those in the profession ( teaching).

I have a lad that could have become a problem. But I wouldn't allow it to happen.

We moved to a very nice large village where everyone knew everyone. Had a knock on the door. He was drinking in school grounds with older lads. I climbed the fence to get to him. Told him to get home. He looked at the lads then told me to f#ck off. Told.him he had one last chance to get home. One of the lads told me to f#ck off before they beat the sh1t out of me. Should I have walked away?

It helped at the time being 18 and half stone and in good shape. Asked the mouthy one if he fancied swallowing his teeth. When they started to come towards me I asked which.one wanted knocking out first. Pointed to the two biggest saying after giving them a slap the others would just run away. The lad just put his head down and went home. Then.one of the lads said they were only joking.

I am strict but fair. If all parents were strict but fair it would be a lot easier. But we have people like yourself who will blame anyone but the parents.

I do blame parents. But overall other things can have more of an influence.

They have taken rights away from teachers. Some parents are animals. Their children can't do wrong. Had to step in a couple of years ago when a child's parents went mental at a teacher on parents night. He then threatened me. That didn't go down well for him. Parents who are bullies bring kids up that are bullies. They see it as a way of life. Not the kids fault. They just have real poor role models.

I always wanted to be either a maths teacher or go into the legal trade. But when I was a teen you either had well off parents or you couldn't go to Uni. I ended up going into mechanical engineering as I could work full time at the same time. When I could afford to train to be a teacher I was earning more than a teacher. And I would have to have studied for years to take a pay cut.

My wife wanted me to do it as she knew hiw much I wanted to. But it just didn't make financial sense.

I’ve got another 40 years to go NW. This time of the academic year is just mad and I’m exhausted which with bugs going round doesn’t bode well. Think I’ll move into tutoring when nearing my 60s

Making ends meet doesn’t mean you can’t bring your kids up with the correct values. They cost nothing.
Nick has a point. Too many don’t bring their kids up with any discipline, respect for others or respect for themselves. Often they’re too wrapped up in their own lives and leave it to someone else.

Similar to you I was brought up in a single parent household, on benefits, knocking about in Hillfields. Got old friends who are in prison now. But with me it was never going to go that route.
My mum had me at 17 and treated me almost as a friend at times but when push came to shove I had full respect for her. Essentially “don’t be a fucking dickhead” was her motto. I never even did the usual drinking in the park nonsense. It helped the fact my auntie is a police officer as well. But yeah, if I had a shit mum who didn’t give a fuck who knows where I’d be now.

It did astound me to a degree that tradesmen/craftsman of my generation subsequently were able to surpass what teachers achieved by late twenties/thirties.
