Andy Thorn on CWR (1 Viewer)

Just leaving the car for work and heard AT was coming on CWR. As much as I'd have loved to skive for a few more minutes, it was the voice in my head with the halo that won the argument, so can anyone summarise what was said by AT etc. Thanks

I can guess.

"It will be 11 vs 11 tomorrow and we will play for 90 mins. We will be putting in 110% effort if not more and we will only lose the game if they score more goals than us."

it will be something along those lines.

Did they mention what time he is on? I have got it on now but it's complete drivel and I'd rather switch over when the big man comes on.

Think he was literally coming on just as i was leaving, so about 8:55.
It sounded like it would be a bit more insightful than just normal questions prompting the usual cliches.

Actual quotes:

"The kids will have to grow up quickly"
"Experienced players have to set an example"
"No point crying over spilt milk"
"If we can we can, if we can't we can't"
"The fans have been terrific, the players have pulled together, as have all the staff"

That's what I remember from a totally forgettable interview, anyway.

Edit:
Question: Is this your toughest job to date?
AT: "I've had it tough all my career, when I was written off as a player at Wimbledon. This is my only job so far, so it must be my toughest"

No pressure on the kids then.

This really worries me. Not only possibly putting the kids in before they are even ready, but expecting them to step up to the plate and help save us too.

In the CT this morning he has said “Off the pitch what will be will be – if we get new players we do, if we don’t then I’ll go with what I’ve got.”

His stating the obvious is starting to real grate badly, just like Dinyull hated Micky Adams talking in the 3rd person.

Now that was very annoying.

It is starting to grate a little and we haven't even begun to start losing matches yet. Can't wait to see what he's got to say when that happens.

"We need to re-group and go again. Dust ourselves down and pick our chins up. We will take each game one at a time and hopefully our luck will change soon."

I agree with the above, I find his interviews extremely tedious, as hes pritty much the spokesperson for the team/club he needs to speak with abit more intelligence.

Well i do not care how he speaks or what cliches he uses. The man is trying, against all odds, to create a siege mentality throughout the squad.

If Andy Thorn were to keep our club in the Championship under the present circumstances, then he should be awarded the freedom of the city.

I wish him well.

He and the players need our support more than they ever have.

If he fails, i'm pretty sure he will have given it his best shot (cliche?) and he will move on.

Then we could approach somebody as eloquent as Oscar Wilde, because correctly delivering the Queen's English has always been

paramount in the success of any football club.

I'm not worried about all the kids stepping up. I think its difficult for defenders because they're gonna make mistakes - thats part of learning. What you don't wanna do is put someone in who isn't mentally strong enough to deal with making those mistakes. But of course they're gonna happen, and that has an affect on the whole team. This isn't just about bringing kids through the ranks, there is too much at stake.

But i wouldn't be too worried about sticking in some forward players.

I think Clarke has enough games under his belt to deal with the pressure of stepping up, dunno about the rest. Bigirimana seems pretty head strong, and Thomas should be confident given Liverpool wanted him.

Well to be honest he's personally in a no lose situation as if we do well - its congratualtions A.T. but if we fail everybody expects it and never mind A.T. you never had a chance as you never had any resources to change the team.

Not such a bad position to be in apart from being totally frustrating at having no cash to bring player in!!!

Very constructive. I too would much rather Thorn lose his rag about no in-comings and rant and rave about that instead. May aswell hey, it's not like he's got much else to talk about is it? We're already fed up about hearing how great the prospects are that are coming through the academy. We're always on about home-grown players etc but as soon as any come through we're bored after 5 minutes of them! What else do you want the guy to say???? We have no money. He knew what he was working with when he signed on the dotted line so he's hardly going to do a Joey Barton now is he??? If anybody is capable of getting the best out of the current crop and has shown that in a very short period of last season it is Thorn. Accept the facts, we'll be lucky to have any in-comings in so the only journal activity will be motivational comments directed at our team. If you want to listen to a manager getting you all excited about new signings and challenging the board for more money I'm sorry to say you've well and truly wasted your time supporting this club and suggest one just up the M69.

I have no doubt that AT is a good motivator.

One of his stares would surely inspire most.

The man knows what it is like to be the under dog.

I expect a spirited display tomorrow, and hopefully our players can rise to the challenge.

I want us desperately not to lose the game.

However, based on how we have fared early on over the last few seasons, tomorrows result will in no way be a benchmark for

the rest of the season ( or will it? ).

Doesn't really bode well for if/when he needs to inspire the troops though, does it?

He hardly needs to be a great orator to motivate the players, so far he has United the dressing room, won the players respect and he is more than capable of giving them a rocket when needed.

''To win this game you need to win this game, if you don't you won't win it....''

We only have 7 games to judge him on so don't judge him to be shit OR to be great just yet. Apparently the players hated Hoothroyd so it wasn't going to take any great shakes to pick the players up after he left.

So players publicly stating that his style of football was far more enjoyable to play has nothing to do with it?
Geez we haven't even played a game yet and we're already talking the bloke down...

Did you even read the rest of that post? I said don't judge him yet - good or bad.

And style of football has nothing, nothing to do with motivating players. In fact managers who are known to get the best out of their players usually play hoofball - Pulis, Allardyce etc.

Just pointing out Boothroyd was hated, so don't think Thorn can be judged (good or bad!) for picking the players up.

Lets be honest he doesnt have to be the worlds greatest orator to get his message across to the players - with the greatest respect to them they are not generally going to be academics now are they. Nor does he need to be motivational giving CWR sound bites - its within the four walls of the changing room etc with the squad that he needs that.

Dinyull - So the likes of Sir Alex, Mourihno, Wenger, Dalglish, Rednapp dont get the best out of their players ?- because they sure dont play hoofball. Bet they motivate even the highest paid money grabbing of their players But I would agree motivation is not about style of play as such although I think buying into a style of play makes it easier to be motivated

more generally ......

Reading this thread there is a worrying trend of negativity to AT - no he isnt the greatest but nor is he the worst - he is unproven. He might not be eloquent in interviews but he is still learning the role - but it is how the players respond to him that is important. Think right now we are up against the odds enough without worrying about whether AT gives a good interview or not. His public speaking is well down on any list of priorities.

To be honest I find the negativity strange when the one thing we all know is that the team need all the positive things it can get this season. Its going to be a tough tough season!

Not necessarily managers like Hughton, Ferguson, Redknapp and Holloway for the past 2 years are know for getting the best out of players but are not known for hoofball.

I understand your point on Thorn, we can't judge him off 10 games last year when there was little to play for, for most of them games. We will see what sort of manager he is this year but the early signs look promising and I am confident I saw enough last season that he is good enough to manage at this level.

You can't please all the people all the time. (cliche )

When it comes to football and talking in cliche's AT one of a long line of offenders.

perhaps he's got a bet going with the players on how many he can work into his interviews... but even thats a cliche's these days.

GOD I need a drink .... and the season to start.. roll 3.00 tomorrow, it'll give me something else to think about :claping hands:

The negativity on here is depressing!
We may lose the opener, we may even lose 3 on the trot but we will need to be patient and see how Thorn's tactics he has promised work.

We may even get off on a great run and put ourselves under pressure too early.

Who knows but I do know the team is not anywhere near as dire as people are making out.
